Denver Heights is filled with single-story, Craftsman cottages and bungalows built between the 1920s and 1950s. These properties range from $100,000 to $350,000, depending on their age and how recently they have been renovated. Some larger ranch-style properties and two-story homes are sprinkled throughout the neighborhood, as well as contemporary townhouses and duplexes. Ranch homes range from $150,000 to $350,000, while two-story homes can sell between $300,000 and $500,000. Reese Bros Barbecue on Hoefgen Avenue has all the South Texas barbecue classics, with smoked meat, homemade tortillas, and signature poblano mac and cheese. Denver Heights has many small convenience stores, and multiple H-E-B locations are nearby, including on New Braunfels Avenue in neighboring Jefferson Heights. San Antonio’s DreamWeek has a full calendar celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, with community clothing and food drives, musical performances and educational presentations. Hundreds of participants turn out every year to walk through the streets of Denver Heights and to celebrate with a cap-off event at Pittman-Sullivan Park.Science and language education at Poe Middle School
Local families are part of the San Antonio Independent School District, which has an overall C-plus Niche rating. Students may start at Herff Elementary School, with a C rating on Niche, and then continue at C-minus-rated Edgar Allan Poe Middle School, a STEM and dual-language school that promotes science, technology and bilingual language skills. Brackenridge High School has a B-minus rating on Niche. Denver Heights Park off Porter Street is a small community park with athletic facilities and a playground surrounding a community center. At the larger Pittman-Sullivan Park on Iowa Street, several large basketball courts and walking trails wrap around the Davis-Scott Family YMCA and the St. Gerard Education and Athletic Center, which both offer all-ages athletic programs. The Education and Athletic Center is connected to St. Gerard’s Catholic Church, one of Denver Heights’ many Catholic churches. Holy Redeemer Catholic Church on Nevada Street and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on Grimes Street are also in the neighborhood. Denver Heights borders the Alamodome, a domed arena on Montana Street that hosts the annual Alamo Bowl, San Antonio’s largest sporting event.Interstates, buses and trains close to downtown San Antonio
Denver Heights is bordered by Interstate 10 to the south and I-37 to the west, two of the city’s largest highways. There are VIA Metropolitan bus stops on nearly every main street, including Porter and South Cherry streets and South New Braunfels Avenue. There’s also an Amtrak station on Hoefgen Avenue outside of the Alamodome. Denver Heights is less than 3 miles from downtown San Antonio, home to many of the city’s major attractions, including the site of The Alamo and the River Walk. San Antonio International Airport is about 8 miles away, and large hospitals like Baptist Medical Center and Methodist Hospital Metropolitan are about 5 miles from Denver Heights.
