Highland Park is one of the area's first suburbs
Located in San Antonio’s Southeast Side, Highland Park is often overlooked for nearby Southtown, Dignowity Hill and the Pearl. This unassuming neighborhood has seen its share of ups and downs. “It was actually one of the first suburbs on the outskirts of town,” says Cesar Amezcua, a Realtor with CA & Company. Highland Park was also the birthplace of Fritos corn chips in 1932, invented in a garage off Roosevelt Avenue. But in the 1970s, swaths of neighborhood homes were converted into apartments or left to deteriorate. More recently, newer developments have come to Highland Park, though some are unwanted, such as turning single-family homes into short-term Airbnb rentals. However, things are looking up for Highland Park. It benefits from an active neighborhood association and historic district eligibility, and it's situated less than 5 miles from several iconic San Antonio landmarks and green spaces. And while there might not be as much entertainment as downtown or strip malls like the Westside, the shops and restaurants near Highland Park are often locally owned and involved with the community.

Homes in Highland Park tell the neighborhood's history
Many of the homes in Highland Park have maintained their original architecture from the early 1900s. Half-timbering, hipped roofs and porches framed by thick columns are common characteristics shared across a mix of bungalows, Spanish and English Tudor Revivals, and especially Craftsman homes. According to Amezcua, there are more and more home renovations and Highland Park is just waiting its turn to be up-and-coming like its neighboring Denver Heights. “There are a lot of first-generation homebuyers who have lived here for 40 to 50 years,” Amezcua adds. “Compared to surrounding areas like Dignowity, it’s still pretty affordable.” Prices often range between $120,000 and $250,000, depending on the size and age of the home. However, recently flipped homes often exceed $300,000.

PorchFest and gardens create community
A strong sense of community is one of the defining features of the Highland Park neighborhood. The Highland Park Neighborhood Association hosts neighborhood cleanups, holiday celebrations and the popular Highland Park PorchFest in October, an event that brings together local musicians for a day of free, family-friendly entertainment. Residents can also participate in the Highland Park Community Garden, a shared space where locals can grow their own produce and connect with neighbors. Along with events, attractions like the famous Alamodome and the Frost Bank Center are within 5 miles.

Juicy steaks are on the menu at the Little Red Barn
Residents who want to stay close to home have Little Red Barn Steak House, which really is just that: a little Western-themed barn specializing in steaks and margaritas since 1963. Poetic Republic Coffee has garnered attention for its monthly questions drawn on the outside of their windows, which locals answer and post on sticky notes. While McCreless Mall on New Braunfels Avenue is the area’s most convenient shopping spot – especially for groceries at H-E-B – Highland Park residents are only 5 miles from several large shopping centers and highly rated restaurants. Nearby Southtown offers a variety of art galleries such as La Villita Historic Village, local 24-hour dining spots like The Original Mexican Restaurant and live entertainment at Arneson River Theatre.

Highland Park is well-connected by bus and major highways
Two major throughways include Highland Park Boulevard and New Braunfels Avenue, providing several bus stops operated by VIA Metropolitan Transit. Highland Park's location makes it easily accessible to major highways, including Interstate 10 and U.S. Highway 281, which allows easy travel to San Antonio International Airport, 12 miles away. “It takes most of San Antonio more than 30 minutes to get around town,” Amezcua says. “But Highland Park is literally 5 minutes from places that locals actually want to hang around at and avoid the touristy spots.”
