Civic Center offers historic appeal in a downtown setting
Just like the rest of San Bernadino’s busy downtown, the city’s Civic Center neighborhood is bustling with historic attractions and visually striking homes. The city has long been a central manufacturing and trade hub for the region known as the Inland Empire. The Civic Center is home to the county's Superior Court as well as the Consulate of Mexico Building, with schools and restaurants just a short drive away from stylish homes.
Classic home styles with access to schools and transit
Residents live on city blocks along avenues lined with towering palm, pine and oak trees. City skyscrapers and the towering San Bernardino Mountain range dominate the neighborhood's skyline. Single-family and multi-family houses comprise the entirety of Civic Center's residential landscape. The area's Craftsman and California ranch-style homes are examples of single-story homes that take advantage of spacious floor plans. However, Craftsman-style homes tend to be taller and have covered front porches. Area Victorian-style homes also feature covered porches that wrap around much of the asymmetrical exterior frame of the home. Simpler and more symmetrical houses in the various colonial styles are present in the area's multi-family dwellings. Residential amenities include street or driveway parking, single or multi-car garages and open floor plans. Most area homes are within a short bike or car ride of most schools and parks. Progressive Properties Realtor Jeff Teel says "you can get more house for your money in [Civic Center]. There's some nice, established neighborhoods with quality schools that have been recently upgraded. Plus freeway access will get you in and out very quickly." Regarding prices, Civic Center single-family homes tend to cost around $415,000, while multi-family houses can cost as much as $610,000.
Public schools and a nearby library support lifelong learning
Public school students are served by the San Bernardino City Unified School District, attending primary schools like Juanita Blakely Jones Elementary from kindergarten through sixth grade. Students move on to intermediate and secondary institutions like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle and Arroyo Valley High School. The latter high school is part of the International Baccalaureate organization, and offers specialized curriculum tracks that prepare students for college courses and careers in STEM and other fields. The nearby Norman F. Feldheym Central Library features a 64,000 square-foot space featuring hundreds of book, CD and movie titles and an expansive computer lab, reference center and meeting rooms.
Green spaces offer a balance of calm and high-energy fun
Parks are just a short distance away and allow residents to get active. Pioneer Park sits just outside Feldheym Library, offering walking trails and shady spaces perfect for relaxing with a good book. Bryce E. Hanes Park offers just under three acres of walking paths, covered playsets and splash pads, athletic fields and an expansive skate park.
National stores and neighborhood favorites
Colorful shopping centers and local stores are available along the neighborhood's thoroughfares. National department stores like Marshalls offer a bevy of clothing, accessories and home décor. Vintage Vinyl Plus is a local music center offering a range of classic records, CDs and music appliances. Civic Center's thoroughfares are also home to plenty of quality restaurants and fast food chains where you can enjoy a nice meal. Start your day at Frankie's Donuts & Deli, a local deli with a range of specialty donuts, sandwiches and coffee. Jovi's Diner is a classic 1960's 1960s-style restaurant open for breakfast and lunch, serving up an assortment of traditional Mexican and American dishes.
A central spot for films and stage shows
San Bernardino Theatre Square is a go-to for various performances and screenings. Built in 1928, the California Theatre of the Performing Arts showcases an assortment of well-known musicals and shows for all ages. The Regal San Bernardino Theater offers multiple screens featuring new releases and seasonal or event film screenings.
