Elevated views in San Diego
Locals enjoy hilltop living in the calm and centrally located neighborhood of San Diego's Del Cerro community. The gentle slopes and commanding cliffs offer backyard views of Cowles Mountain, Rancho Mission Canyon and other peaks in San Diego's Mission Trail Regional Park. Del Cerro means "of the hill" in Spanish, and a frequent breeze cools homes sit atop elevations; most of which were built between the 1950s and the 1970s. "Del Cerro is central to most major attractions in San Diego. The neighborhood features wonderful public schools, is in walking distance to Lake Murray and has an amazing sense of community," says Michael Willis, a Realtor and local area specialist for Del Cerro and surrounding communities. Though San Diego State University is across Interstate 8 to the south, Del Cerro remains a relatively quiet and primarily residential neighborhood.

Exploring Del Cerro's parks and natural spaces
Princess Del Cerro Park offers plenty of space to run and play. Its large playground area with multiple structures is popular with local children. Residents of the Princess Del Cerro subdivision can walk and cycle to the park. Lake Murray Community Park offers an out-and-back trail covering more than 5 miles at the eastern edge of Del Cerro. Picnic tables overlook the Murray Reservoir, frequented for boating and kayaking. Swimming isn't allowed in the water, as the San Diego Public Utilities Department uses the reservoir. The area's western side is home to Navajo Canyon, where outdoor enthusiasts explore the trails. Locals can also head to Del Cerro Park for the tennis courts and community pool.

Shopping at Windmill Farms and eating at KnB
Inside Del Cerro, residents can savor a few local restaurants. "Hands down KnB Bistro is the best! Del Cerro itself doesn't have a lot of restaurants, but KnB is solid. The food and drinks are great," Willis says. The bistro is a popular lunch spot serving soups, sandwiches and salads in a cozy bar. Del's Hideout is a casual, Texas-style barbecue restaurant in the southwest corner of the neighborhood. Since 2003, Windmill Farms Community Market has been an independent neighborhood grocer, offering locals organic food and fresh produce.
