A tranquil pocket of the city
Diamond Heights is an area that few outside of San Francisco have heard of, says longtime city resident David Lytle, former editor of the defunct local 7x7 Magazine. And that in itself could be considered one of this neighborhood’s strongest qualities. This isn’t a tourist destination, Lytle says. Rather, this is a primarily residential outpost whose hills offer striking views of the rest of the city. “It’s a fully planned neighborhood on three hills, with grand homes on winding streets and some of the most fantastic views of the city, sweeping down to hilly Glen Canyon or down to the bay and the ocean,” Lytle says. Crime here is well below the national average according to the CAP Index, too.

A thriving, master-planned vision
Modern-day Diamond Heights spawned through the work of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, which began piecing together a new master-planned community in the area in the early 1960s. Work continued through the late 1970s. In turn, much of Diamond Heights’ single-family housing stock dates back to the ’60s and ’70s, and options here come in a variety of contemporary styles, with tall windows that let in the area’s sunshine. “It has some of the sunniest, least foggy weather in San Francisco, but because it’s close to the Pacific, it’s also one of the windiest neighborhoods here,” Lytle says. “You feel exposed to nature — but if that’s not your thing, you can just head inside from your deck and enjoy the view.”
Homes in Diamond Heights hug the neighborhood’s winding streets tightly, a maze of well-kept residences. Some townhomes and condos supplement the single-family houses in the neighborhood, and those and the single-family homes in Diamond Heights come with prices that start at about $1.5 million. Prices can climb to about $2.6 million.

Retail complex woven into the neighborhood
The community here comes complete with its own retail space, the Diamond Heights Shopping Center. A Safeway supermarket and a Walgreens anchor the complex. Lytle says it’s “the hands-down nicest Safeway in the city.” Locals can also grab a quick bite to eat at Creighton's Bakery Cafe here, whose sandwiches are well-liked. Those with a taste for Japanese cuisine can also stop by Au Sushi here. Among the other businesses in Diamond Heights Shopping Center are Great Clips, Seven Hills Veterinary Hospital and the fashion boutique Bright Like Diamonds.
