Forest Hill

Mixed housing styles on picturesque streets
The neighborhood’s streets are lined with tall trees amongst rolling hills, making way for a mixed housing landscape. Large Spanish Revival-style homes with decorative facades mingle with cottage-style homes and sleek modern designs. Other common housing styles include contemporary split levels, craftsmans, Tudors and Mediterranean Revivals. “These are not cookie-cutter homes; they are original designs from different architects. You will rarely see two that look the same,” says Canady. However, the homes have some common exterior features, including small front door staircases surrounded by mature greenery. This feature is one of the highlights of the “artistic embellishments” around which the neighborhood was designed. Homes with two to three bedrooms range from $1.5 million to $2 million. Larger homes with more bedrooms and more ornate architecture are between $2.5 million and $3 million. Some estates on larger lots with elaborate gardens run between $3 million and $3.5 million.Top-rated public schools with career technical education academies
Students may attend West Portal Elementary followed by Herbert Hoover Middle, both of which get an A-minus rating from Niche. The A-rated Abraham Lincoln High School is a California Distinguished School. It offers numerous AP and Career Technical Education academies.Multiple bus stops and nearby Interstate 280
While the neighborhood is relatively tucked away, it’s also conveniently located. Route 1 borders Forest Hill and is a main thoroughfare for getting around the city. Interstate 280 is about 4 miles east, which connects directly south to Silicon Valley. “The neighborhood is very attractive for commutes,” says Canady. “And it’s great for those who work on the Peninsula but want a suburban haven in the city.” The Forest Hill Muni Metro Station is located on the neighborhood's eastern border for public transportation, while the San Francisco International Airport is 13 miles south. Plus, UCSF Health, St. Mary’s Hospital is about 2.5 miles north of the neighborhood.Surrounded by a variety of recreational spaces
J.P. Murphy Playground is a neighborhood green space with children’s playscapes and tennis and basketball courts. Hawk Hill is a unique recreational space in the neighborhood with scenic views and bird-watching possibilities. Immediately south of the neighborhood is the West Portal Recreation Center, anchored by a popular playground. Golden Gate Heights Park is within walking distance, just west of the neighborhood. It features a renovated playground and trails that lead to oceanside views. The sprawling Golden Gate Park, a city landmark that features the San Francisco Botanical Garden, is less than 2 miles away. The park's western edge features a portion of the Pacific Coast beaches.Next to a mix of local eateries and shopping
Many dining options surround the neighborhood. ChouChou French Bistro is an upscale eatery, while adjacent establishments include Yoji Sushi House and Dumpling Zone. An eclectic concentration of restaurants can be found nearby along the Portal Avenue corridor in West Portal, less than a mile south. Popular spots here include Calibur, known for its organic burgers and Trattoria da Vittorio, a Calabrian-inspired restaurant that serves up homemade Italian favorites. For groceries and big-box shopping, Target and Trader Joe’s are about 2 miles south of the neighborhood.Neighborhood association events at the clubhouse
Forest Hill is served by an active neighborhood association. “It’s not a traditional HOA, but you pay annually, and that money goes toward such things as maintaining roads and greenery in public spaces,” says Canady. The association also organizes year-round community events at its historic clubhouse, an Arts and Crafts-inspired structure built in 1919. The clubhouse hosts an annual summer BBQ, holiday parties, and musical and theatrical performances. “Residents can rent out the clubhouse for private events, which is also a really nice amenity,” adds Canady.
