Miraloma Park
Colorful row homes and a hillside setting
Along mildly hilly and winding streets, two- to three-story colored single-family row homes, make up the majority of housing in Miraloma Park, although there are detached properties as well. Most homes were built in the 1940s through the ‘60s with two-car garages and tiny front lawns and backyards. The homes’ exteriors often include small shrubbery and succulent gardens, giving off a more natural appeal as the streetscapes are not well-populated with trees. Renovated mid-century townhouses are the most common architectural style, although there are some Spanish styles with clay-tiled stucco roofs mixed in with a few Tudors. Some homes are set on stilts with wide rear decks that overlook the hills or Pacific Ocean. “The homes near Mt. Davidson are at a higher elevation, and some of them have pretty spectacular views,” Gregory says. Home prices typically range from around $1.2 million to $2.7 million, which Gregory mentions is “fairly reasonable” for San Francisco. “The demand for single-family homes here is strong, but it is usually not as competitive as some other city neighborhoods,” Gregory adds.Neighborhood sandwich shops and nearby popular dining
While many trendy eateries and shops reside just outside of Miraloma Park, there are a few options within the neighborhood, including Pops Sandwich. This family-owned classic deli sandwich shop is a favorite for locals, offering a variety of sandwiches on fresh-made bread. Creighton’s is another neighborhood staple, serving sandwiches and pastries from apple fritters to donuts. Portal Avenue is a few miles away on the west side of Miraloma Park, with a row of restaurants and shops like the favorite El Toreador Mexican restaurant. This popular eatery is known for its festive, knickknack-packed interior décor and serves traditional Mexican favorites such as tacos with freshly made tortillas and enchiladas. Less than two miles from Miraloma Park is Trattoria da Vittorio, an Italian restaurant with a nice streetside patio. The restaurant’s food is inspired by the owner’s Italian grandmother, showcasing homestyle Italian food with popular menu items like Calabrian-inspired pizzas and lasagna with hearty Bolognese sauce. Miraloma Park is home to a Mollie Stone’s Market for grocery essentials, featuring a mix of organic items and classic everyday pantry staples. An additional grocery store, Safeway, is located in nearby Diamond Heights Shopping Center, which also features service shops and convenience stores.Neighborhood block parties and holiday cook-offs
Many community events occur right within Miraloma Park and are put on by the Miraloma Park Improvement Club, an active neighborhood organization. “The Miraloma Park Improvement Club manages the Miraloma Clubhouse, which was built in 1940 and is a nice venue for community gatherings,” Gregory says. During the Christmas season, the MPIC puts on its annual Holiday Party and Cook-Off at the clubhouse. All Miraloma Park residents and local business owners are invited to this event, which features potluck-style food, drinks, live music, and children’s activities. One of the newer traditions is the annual Neighborfest Block Party. This block party, taking place in September right by the Melrose-Detroit Botanical Garden, closes the street off for traffic to bring residents together for an afternoon of neighborly fun. The event features information booths, homestyle food, games for the kids and live music.Highly rated public schools and pathway programs
Public students are zoned for Miraloma Elementary School, which gets an A from Niche, followed by the B-rated James Denman Middle School. Upper-level students can attend the A-minus-rated Balboa High School, which offers special Pathways academic programs designed to help students develop 21st-century skills for focused studies. These programs include topics such as creative arts, law and game design.Nature trails and the highest city peak at Mt. Davidson
One of the most special aspects of living in Miraloma Park is that Mount Davidson is located right on the neighborhood's border. This site is iconic for being the city’s highest peak, offering unparalleled views of San Francisco and beyond and is home to the 838-foot Mt. Davidson cross statue. This wooded hill area also features numerous hiking trails within its eucalyptus forest. Residents can walk along the trails surrounded by native wildflowers like California poppies and hog fennel while getting a chance to spot hawks and owls. To the east of Miraloma Park is the expansive Reservoir Lands at Glen Park, featuring Glen Canyon Park. This 66-acre recreation area, with naturally forested slopes and wildflower growths, features many hiking trails, a playground, baseball fields and tennis courts. It also has a 17,600-foot recreation center with a gymnasium and an auditorium. Located right within the neighborhood is the small Miraloma Park, a 2.2-acre city park known for its artistic “Dragon Tail Staircase” walkway that leads up to an updated, sanded-floor playground.A hub for public transportation
Miraloma Park residents have access to multiple modes of public transportation. Numerous city bus stops are located throughout the neighborhood, and the Glen Park BART station sits just to the west of the neighborhood for metro rail traveling throughout San Francisco and the Peninsula. The main Interstate 280 intersection is a few miles out for quick traveling or commuting in and out of the city, while the San Francisco International Airport is 12 miles south of Miraloma Park.
