From industrial to innovative

A mix of a lively waterfront atmosphere and calm, comfortable living, Mission Bay is a vibrant, up-and-coming San Francisco district that has come a long way. Formerly an industrial area known for its shipyards and butcheries, the neighborhood got a major facelift when city officials decided to redevelop the area in the late 1990s. Now, it’s a hotbed of new life, with soaring condo towers, shiny sports arenas, a university hospital and Uber's corporate headquarters all calling it home. Steven Huang, a Realtor with Ascend Real Estate, says the neighborhood is becoming increasingly popular with young people, tech workers and families because of its central location. “It’s attracting a lot of tech workers who work nearby or commute to Silicon Valley. The terminus of the Caltrain is right there, which will take you straight to Silicon Valley,” Huang says.

Down by the bay

Being right on the bay opens options for outdoor activities, whether by land or sea. Pedestrians flock to Mission Creek Park, one of the area’s newer open green spaces, where it’s very common to see groups of friends taking a stroll with their pets or just taking in the scenery. Split between the north and south sides of Mission Creek, the park boasts a boathouse and boat launch onto the Mission Creek Channel on the north end, along with courts for tennis, basketball and sand volleyball. The north end also has the Berry Street Dog Park. Mission Creek South caters to more event-driven activities as it houses an amphitheater, open lawn areas and the Mission Creek Pavilion, which offers patio seating and floor-to-ceiling windows for views of the water. Both ends offer esplanades for pedestrians to enjoy a nice walk along the water. For kid-friendly fun, Mission Bay Kids Park is a lively community space with a modern design and interactive play areas and climbing structures. “It’s one of the most popular parks in the area. A lot of playdates happen there,” Huang says.

Cheer on the hometown teams

There’s no shortage of fun-filled activities in Mission Bay, with sporting events leading the pack. Basketball buffs can grab tickets to a game at the Chase Center, an 18,000-seat arena on the San Francisco Bay waterfront, to cheer on the Golden State Warriors. Oracle Park, home of the San Francisco Giants, is also on the waterfront. On game day, it's not uncommon to see boaters and kayakers floating in the bay outside the ballpark watching the jumbotron.
