North Beach is SF's Little Italy
North Beach may not be anywhere near a beach — the shoreline migrated east long ago as the city expanded on landfill — but it remains one of San Francisco's most beloved neighborhoods. The longtime residents, young professionals, and families who live here share an appreciation for its walkable streets, European feel and lively cultural offerings.
Tucked away in the city's historic northeast corner, North Beach has been home to San Francisco's Little Italy since after the 1906 earthquake. That heritage is still alive in the trattorias, cafes, and bakeries that line Columbus Avenue. But the neighborhood's history runs deeper than Italian food. In the 1950s, North Beach was the epicenter of the Beat Generation, with writers like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg gathering in its cafes and bars to reshape American literature.

Edwardian buildings on hilly streets
North Beach's hilly streets are lined with colorful Edwardian-style condo buildings from the turn of the century. Many units have been renovated with modern finishes and oversized bay windows. Side streets are narrow and shaded by trees, lending a quiet residential feel to parts of one of the city's busiest neighborhoods. "It's not a quiet neighborhood, but it's more low-key than a lot of other neighborhoods near downtown," says Realtor Milan Jezdimirovic of MD Real Estate, who has worked in the area for over 15 years. "There are quiet parts." Condo prices range from around $900,000 to just over $2 million. Multifamily properties also go up for sale in the neighborhood fairly regularly, generally in the $2 million to $3 million range.

Home to Italian Cafes, Independent Bookstores, and Local Markets
Nearly every establishment along Columbus Avenue is independently owned, giving the neighborhood a unique character that feels worlds apart from chain-dominated commercial strips. "It has a very indie vibe to it," says Jezdimirovic. "Parts of it definitely feel like they belong to a different era." City Lights Bookstore, the legendary independent bookshop and publisher founded by beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti in 1953, is still a working literary landmark. Caffe Trieste, open since 1956, is one of the oldest espresso houses on the West Coast. The Italian Homemade Company sells fresh pasta, imported cheeses, and other specialty items out of a small storefront deli. For everyday groceries, residents can walk to the Trader Joe's on Bay Street.
