San Francisco’s oceanside community with laid-back character
Situated along the furthest west side of San Francisco, Outer Sunset is a coastline neighborhood known for its laid-back culture and beachy California surfer vibe. “Outer Sunset edges right onto the Pacific, and we are only a few blocks from Ocean Beach, which is very popular, so that makes it special,” says Maggie Siegel, a local librarian at the neighborhood’s popular Ortega Library. Once a stretch of untouched sand dunes, Outer Sunset is now home to a unique residential enclave full of pastel-hued bungalows, expansive parks and a cool dining and shopping scene that matches the area’s relaxed attitude. From tech workers looking for a waterside escape from the bustle of the city to young families wanting to live in an easygoing area with top-rated schools, Ocean Beach attracts a range of residents as widespread as its oceanside attractions. “It’s a diverse and very family-friendly neighborhood,” Siegel says.

Forested meadows and Ocean Beach adventure
Outer Sunset is an outdoor adventurer’s dream with multiple parks and oceanside attractions. Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove is a natural wonder, encompassed by grand cypress and redwood trees, featuring walking paths, tennis courts and a large amphitheater nestled within a lushly forested meadow. The park is also home to San Francisco’s iconic 130-year-old roadhouse, a bullet-pierced remnant of the city’s once Wild West past. Golden Gate Park sits directly north of Outer Sunset, where residents enjoy vast recreational amenities from trails to lakeside picnicking areas and the city’s Japanese Tea Garden, the oldest in the country. Nearby, Sunset Reservoir is an overlook area offering exceptional Golden Gate Bridge views, and a few blocks west is Ocean Beach. This 3.5-mile white sand beach may not be the most popular spot for surfing because of its frigid waters, but area surfers still frequent it. Other locals love coming here for walks along the sand, kite flying, windsurfing and bonfires.

Colorful row houses and beachside views
Along Outer Sunset’s wide streetscapes, rows of colorful pastel homes with sporadic clusters of palm trees give off a coastal housing aesthetic. Bungalows, Spanish styles with stucco roofs and transitional-fusion homes make up most of the architectural landscape. Homes are often adorned with front bay windows, bringing in tons of natural, unobstructed light as the neighborhood’s front lawns are not very shaded. Home prices typically range from around $1 million to $2.5 million, with the higher priced properties having more luxury and modern styles. While most streets are flat, some homes are populated along San Francisco’s infamously hilly main streets. Other houses residing along the Upper Great Highway on the east side provide residents with oceanside views.

Summer music festivals and holiday markets
One of the most beloved neighborhood events is the Stern Grove Festival, where residents get to head right into the forestry of Stern Grove Park to enjoy free summer concerts at the site’s tree-encompassed amphitheater. The annual Sunset Community Festival takes place in September, with family-friendly activities from a kid’s bounce house to carnival games and a petting zoo. The event also features live musical performances, food trucks and vendors. When the holidays roll around, residents can head to the Sunset Holiday Mercantile for two days of festive local vendors, food trucks, live music and regional beer and wine tastings.
Chill dining offerings and shops along Judah Street
Outer Beach is surrounded by laid-back eateries, markets and hip retail. Along Judah Street, residents can check out an array of surf shops, artsy retailers and clothing stores. For dining, a community favorite is Outerlands, featuring new American-style cuisine with an open-style kitchen and weathered-wood interior walls. Locals often line out the door for their popular brunch specials, which include their infamous Danish pancakes. Around the corner, Devil’s Teeth Baking Company is a local staple for grabbing a freshly baked sourdough breakfast sandwich before heading out to Ocean Beach. Hook Fish is a mellow fish market and seafood shack with popular items like fish burritos with a side of chips and guacamole. Java Beach Café is the neighborhood’s big surfer hangout, right across the street from Ocean Beach. For over 30 years, the café has offered light breakfast and lunch items and locally roasted coffee. There’s no shortage of local, organic and health food markets in Outer Sunset, with the most frequented being Gus’s Market. An alternative to this is Other Avenues Grocery Cooperative, a co-op offering carefully sourced, sustainable foods and all-organic produce. For more fresh fruits and veggies, the Outer Sunset Farmer’s Market and Mercantile is open year-round on Sundays and features food trucks, local artisan and retail vendors and live music.

There are always people running, biking, walking, surfing, skateboarding, doing yoga, etc. Of course people smoke weed here, it's San Francisco. I haven't notice much crazier than that. Maybe a few super drunks at the end of the night at Pits (the local bar), but it's a bar so what else would be happening. I don't feel like more people than normal are smoking tobacco or doing other hard drugs, I would actually say it's less because they can smoke weed and no one cares so they're respectful about it all. I've yet to have a problem. And I used to live in Vegas and in Oregon (the town I lived in is fondly known as McMethVille), so I know crazy, stupid, and dangerous. The Sunset is a breath of fresh air.

The people are awesome out in the Sunset. Very neighborly without being in your business. Even the homeless people out here are decent. I've never had problems with them here like I have in the TL or the Mission even. Just a bunch of beach bums, students, and families.

I can't complain about the crime and safety of the area I live in because it relatively safe compared to other neighborhoods in the city.
