Parkside
Neighborhood in San Francisco, California
San Francisco 94116

Marina-style housing and wide residential streetscapes
Parkside mainly consists of single-family homes built from the 1930s to the 1940s. These residences are a painter's palette of both soft and vibrant colors that offer a varied look throughout the streetscape. The landscape has gently sloping lots, and most dwellings have steps leading up to front doors. There are a lot of vintage housing styles, such as Arts and Crafts bungalows and cottages from the early 20th century. Marina-style homes are also a major design trend in Parkside and are seen throughout most of the neighborhoods in the Sunset district. Other common housing styles include Mediterranean influences, which display expressive and compact designs. Two-bedroom single-family home prices range from around $1 million to $1.5 million, while four-bedroom homes range from $1.6 million to $2.6 million. The neighborhood features wide streets, and while there’s a lack of trees that provide shade, many homes display small greenery, including succulents and plants. Parkside’s streetscapes are quieter than other Sunset District neighborhoods due to their distance a little further away from more buzzing beach area establishments. “Some of these homes, depending on where they are situated in the neighborhood, offer really great deck views that look out all the way to the ocean,” says Monika Carmichael, a Realtor with Elevation Real Estate and a San Francisco resident of 28 years who lives in nearby Inner Sunset.Community green spaces and nearby Ocean Beach
As its name suggests, Parkside has many green spaces and even more just outside the neighborhood. Inside the neighborhood, there’s Parkside Square, which has basketball and tennis courts, a playground and picnic tables. McCoppin Square offers 7 acres of green space with a gated playground, walking paths, tennis courts and a baseball field. The windswept Sunset Reservoir Park is an open space that looks out to scenic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean. Just outside the neighborhood is the Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove, which is a verdant gathering space with hilltops, meadows and vibrant wildflowers. The grounds contain an amphitheater that sets the stage for summer concerts and musical events hosted by the San Francisco Symphony. There is also a popular dog park for canine residents. To the west of the park is a lush valley and lake known as Pine Lake Park, an optimal spot for viewing migratory birds. The neighborhood is less than 2.5 miles from the San Francisco Zoo and the sandy shores of Ocean Beach. Although it’s known for being a cold beach with freezing to cool temperatures, the area is a popular spot for walking along the beach, volleyball tournaments and for those willing to embrace the cold, surfers are still a common sight.Public schools with specialty programs
Students may attend Dianne Feinstein Elementary School, which gets an A rating from Niche, followed by the A-minus-rated Aptos Middle School. The A-rated Abraham Lincoln High School offers academic pathway programs in art and architecture, and biotechnology. Students may opt for a nearby private school option, including Lycée Français de San Francisco, a top-rated private high school with a language immersion program. It has an A-plus rating on Niche.Community association events and nearby music festivals
The People of Parkside Sunset is an association of community members and business owners who plan and host events like talent shows, Movies in McCoppin, and holiday tree lighting ceremonies. Other major community events occur at Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove, known for its summer music festivals. The San Francisco Ballet and San Francisco Symphony also perform there throughout the year.Light rail travel options and multiple main thoroughfares
Multiple bus stops and Muni light rail stops are located in the neighborhood, particularly along Taraval Street. The closest BART Station is the West Portal BART Station, a little over a mile east of the neighborhood. Parkside sits next to Route 1/Shoreline Highway, which heads south to Daly City and north to the Golden Gate Bridge, leading to Sausalito and Marin County. Route 1 also connects to Interstate 280, which heads south to San Jose or north to connect with Interstate 80 and cross the bridge into Oakland and the East Bay. San Francisco International Airport is about 15 miles south.Shopping and dining along Taraval Street
Most commerce is on Taraval Street, which extends along the neighborhood's southern end. This strip includes many Asian-inspired restaurants, with favorites including Dumpling Kitchen. The community also contains several other local restaurant options, including Chalos. The bright contemporary restaurant serves Argentinian-style fare such as empanadas and churros. Nearby Lou’s Café dishes out sandwiches with fresh ingredients and Italian sodas. O'Brien's is a popular Irish-style pub that draws crowds on weekends and game days. There are also local shops and boutiques along Taraval Street, including trendy spots like SarangHello, a music store specializing in K-pop music and Korean culture. Lakeshore Plaza is less than a ½ mile south of the neighborhood, with a Lucky grocery store and other big box stores like Ross. Stonestown Galleria is about a mile away for more extensive shopping with numerous stores, including Trader Joe’s, Apple and Zara. It also features a lot of casual eateries, including Boudin Bakery Café, a California bakery chain established in 1849.
