Presidio is an iconic community overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge
One of San Francisco's most picturesque entrance corridors, the Presidio spans 1,500 acres at the mouth of the San Francisco Bay on the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge. This community features ample hiking trails, beachside views, a golf course, hiking trails and easy access to shopping and dining.
Originally a colonial Spanish fort, the U.S. military took this area over in the 1800s and maintained it as an Army base until the 1990s. Since the transition a few decades ago, the National Park Service has rented out the Mediterranean-style homes, apartments and other residences where U.S. Army officers and soldiers once lived with their families.
Higher prices in Presidio
Like the rest of San Francisco, the Presidio is expensive. One-bedroom apartments can run $3,000 to $5,000 a month, on par with rents elsewhere in the city. Single-family homes cost as much as $7,000 a month. Homes here are only moments away from Pacific Ocean beaches, historic military sites, scenic hiking trails and breathtaking vistas.
The community's shuttle runs toward several restaurants and stores
With various restaurants and shops in the surrounding neighborhoods, you won't have to travel far to enjoy a fabulous outing or a night at home with takeout for dinner. A free shuttle service makes it even easier to get around, as the Presidio Go Shuttle system gives rides to stops on the way to and from downtown. The regional fast-food chain Proposition Chicken operates one of its locations outside the park along the California Street thoroughfare. Grab a sandwich and some fries before you make the mistake of shopping hungry at Bryan's gourmet market next door. For an upscale but cozy Italian dinner, Sociale on Sacramento Street provides an intimate garden-like setting to gather with friends.
Locals have access to cafes, pubs and bistros
You'll find places to shop and dine in the park, as the area includes several local and national retailers. Next to the offices of motion picture studios Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic, you can grab a latte at either Starbucks or Café RX, a small coffee shop serving organic salads and sandwiches. After lifting weights at the Presidio YMCA or sweating through a class at the Baptiste Yoga studio, hit the showers and cool off with a refreshment before dinner at Sessions at the Presidio, a casual gastropub that specializes in craft beer and plates prepared with produce grown across the bay at George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch. If beer isn't your thing, you could instead order wine with grapes from the Skywalker Vineyards or an Italian or French chateau. Located in the historic Presidio Officer's Club, Colibri Mexican Bistro serves traditional Mexican cuisine with warm handmade tortillas and a slate of refreshments that includes smoky mezcal cocktails. The Presidio also overlooks the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific coastline, making this a popular destination for tourists and local visitors.
The San Francisco Unified School District earns high remarks on Niche
Families living in the park can enroll their children at Sutro Elementary nearby. Located in the San Francisco Unified School District, students and their families can apply to the secondary school of their choice, as the school division does not require attendance at specific schools based on location. If they wish to stay close to home, though, they can try to enroll at Roosevelt Middle School and Galileo High School.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
