Yerba Buena
Museums, ice skating and bowling
Yerba Buena’s city blocks are jam-packed with major cultural institutions — the neighborhood is home to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of the African Diaspora, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Children’s Creativity Museum and the American Bookbinders Museum. All year round, locals and visitors can be seen streaming into glitzy buildings for contemporary art exhibits, museum lectures and field trips with the kids. There’s also the Yerba Buena Ice Skating and Bowling Center, a rooftop recreation complex that’s perfect for an evening out, and the Yerba Buena Children’s Garden, a grandiose play area with climbing structures, slides and a stepped seating area.Upscale dining and shopping
The high-end and contemporary restaurants found in Yerba Buena have helped make San Francisco a global foodie destination. The Mediterranean fare at Luce, the imaginative small plates at Benu and the lofty seafood plates at Aphotic often blur the line between food and art. But there are also plenty of homey eateries like Yank Sing that feature critically praised cuisine at a more affordable price. For shopping, the San Francisco Centre is at the heart of the neighborhood. This indoor shopping mall features upscale apparel stores, chain restaurants and department stores like Bloomingdale’s. Big box stores and grocers are also available nearby, including Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Soma Produce and Target.Local gardens and rooftop parks
It may be an urban business district, but residents aren’t sacrificing parks and open space to live here. Far from it. Yerba Buena Gardens is a great place to relax when it’s nice out. Its landscaped lawns, lush tapestry of gardens, award-winning architecture and public art offer a respite from busy, downtown streets. For a unique urban outdoor experience, there’s Salesforce Park, a four-story high rooftop green space that stretches across four city blocks where visitors enjoy stunning views of the cityscape. It features an array of trails, lawns, bamboo groves and an amphitheater that holds up to 1,000 people. There are also plenty of weekly free activities held at the park, including live music, yoga classes and kids’ storytime.Luxury condos with a view
While many professionals leave their jobs in the district and return home to other parts of the city or the suburbs, there are many people who also live and work in the area. Luxury condo complexes offer a variety of sizes and styles to choose from, whether it’s a top-floor suite overlooking the Bay or something much smaller. Upscale amenities are the norm, with many buildings offering residents access to private lobbies, fitness studios, swimming pools and entertainment lounges. Its central location means residents pay top dollar to live here: one-, two- and three-bedroom units can cost anywhere from $1 million to more than $10 million. “Prices in Yerba Buena have come down since the COVID-19 pandemic. There are some really great opportunities for people to buy a condo here,” Goldberg says.Public schools close to home
Young students can attend Daniel Webster Elementary, which earns a B-plus rating from Niche. The school offers Spanish dual-language immersion courses for children who come from primarily Spanish-speaking families. Living in the San Francisco Unified School District, families can apply to send their kids to any middle or high school in the district, which is helpful for those who are interested in special programs and courses. Close to home are the C-plus-rated Lick Middle School and the A-rated Galileo Academy of Science and Technology in the nearby Marina District.Getting around Downtown San Francisco and beyond
Cable cars and bus stops are located throughout Yerba Buena, offering convenient options for inner-city travel. Market Street offers two places to hop on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train — one at the intersection of 5th Street and the other at the intersection of 2nd Street. The BART offers connections to East Bay cities like Oakland and Berkeley as well as to suburbs south of San Francisco. Interstate 80 borders the southern edge of Yerba Buena.
