Students start their education close to home at Brooktree Elementary School, which gets a B-plus grade from Niche. Brooktree is right in the middle of the neighborhood and walkable from most homes. The next steps are Morrill Middle School and Independence High School, both of which get A-minus ratings. The high school is a magnet school for students who want to explore math, science and engineering subjects. It’s also known for its award-winning performing arts programming, from band and orchestra ensembles to theatre classes that put on well-attended spring and fall productions.

Largely built in the 1970s, Brooktree features a mix of modest ranch-style and Traditional homes on small lots. Brooktree Park is a community gathering place in the heart of the neighborhood. Its playground, picnic areas and walking paths sit right next to Brooktree Elementary School, making it a popular afterschool hangout for students and parents. Cataldi Park, just a few blocks away, offers 17 acres of open space along with tennis courts, trails and playgrounds. Little League baseball players also enjoy proximity to Flickinger Park, where local games are held all season long. Santa Clara County’s sprawling hills, meadows and nature reserves are just a few miles away. “It’s about a 10-minute drive for people who like hiking and the outdoors,” Tran says.

There’s Pho Dao Restaurant for Vietnamese cuisine, Tindahan Pinoy for Filipino fare and Olioli Hawaiian BBQ. It’s anchored by Dai-Thanh Supermarket, which specializes in Asian groceries. For everything else, it’s about 2 miles to Great Mall, an upscale indoor mall with a movie theatre and a wide range of apparel shops. It’s 10 miles to Downtown San Jose, where residents can go to high-end restaurants, hole-in-the-wall eateries and breweries.
