Mountainous surroundings and luxury homes in Country View Estates
Country View Estates is perched in the hilly outskirts of south San Jose, where the Almaden Valley suburbs meet the redwood forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains. As the name suggests, its winding streets and spacious homes offer sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. Scenic views may be its biggest draw, but it’s also known for strong schools and its proximity to a myriad of outdoor recreation. “The elevation gives you some great views. It’s got great schools, it’s close to Almaden Country Club and you’re about 30 minutes from Silicon Valley,” says Realtor Aaron Yang of Compass Real Estate, who has been working in the area for around five years.

Upscale, Mediterranean Revival homes on half-acre lots
Palatial homes are tucked away on palm tree-lined streets in Country View Estates. “The really big houses are up at the top of the hill to capitalize on the views,” Yang says. Most have summery Mediterranean-style flourishes like red tiled roofs, stucco walls and arched windows and doorways. Interiors are extravagant with high ceilings, tall windows and up to five bedrooms and bathrooms. Prices for luxury models range from $4 million to $4.5 million. There are some townhomes in the neighborhood as well that sell for between $1.5 million and $2 million. Safety is also a plus for Country View Estates — the neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, the best possible score, compared to the national average of 4.

Outdoor recreation includes hiking, golf and community parks
Country View Estates backs up to the sprawling hills and canyons of Almaden Quicksilver County Park. Covering more than 4,000 acres, this popular park sits atop the long-defunct mercury mines of San Jose that were used to process ore during the California Gold Rush. Today, it’s a well-trod hiking and mountain biking spot with a labyrinth of deep trails. Guadalupe Reservoir is within the park. It’s a great spot for casting a line but catch and release is recommended given the area’s mercury mining past. Also close to home is Glenview Park and Almaden Golf & Country Club, a private club that’s hosted a handful of major PGA tour events. “Country View Estates is great for people who want to be close to the outdoors, but still be able to commute to the city,” Yang says.

Country View Estates is at an elevated risk for wildfires
Residents should be aware that the neighborhood’s proximity to the mountains also puts it at an increased risk for wildfires. In 2020, a major wildfire occurred about 25 miles south of San Jose in Big Basin Redwoods State Park that burned tens of thousands of acres and destroyed hundreds of homes. To help protect residents from fires, there are two fire stations within a few miles of Country View Estates.
