McKuen is a San Jose suburb surrounded by shopping

On the south end of San Jose ’s Blossom Valley, the neighborhood of McKuen puts residents right in the middle of the area’s suburban amenities. It’s literally surrounded by large shopping centers, walkable park spaces, schools and transit stations, and it's less than 8 miles south of downtown. “The main advantage of being in Blossom Valley is its central location,” says Pete Flores, owner of Silicon Valley Residential Brokerage Inc., who’s been in San Jose real estate for almost 30 years. “It means that it’s a little busier, but you have all of San Jose around you.” McKuen offers a mix of condos and single-family homes while maintaining the same suburban appeal as the rest of Blossom Valley. “This area is less expensive than the neighborhoods around it, but a single-family home will still be $1.4 million,” Flores says. “It’s almost not worth comparing prices because there isn’t a place in San Jose that’s not desirable anymore.” McKuen provides this suburban San Jose setting with residential options to fit different lifestyles.

Condos and Spanish-style homes on suburban streets

The community is split between condos and single-family homes, but the streetscape is consistent throughout both areas. Even the condo buildings sit on green lawns with shady trees along wide, sidewalk-lined streets, making them appear like single-family dwellings. Condos are the most plentiful option. Each building contains four two-bedroom units, each around 900 square feet, and residents have access to a community pool. Units range from just over $400,000 to just under $600,000 — updated units are on the higher end. Many of the single-family homes here have Spanish-style architecture, with white exteriors and red-tiled roofs. Only a couple were sold in 2025, including a four-bedroom home for $1.3 million and a five-bedroom home for $2.1 million.

Students can walk to Allen at Steinbeck Elementary School

Neighborhood kids can walk to Allen at Steinbeck, the local elementary school, which receives a C-plus from Niche. They continue a few miles south at Castillero Middle School, rated a B-plus. Gunderson High School, which gets a B, rounds out the academic pipeline. Gunderson offers an array of honors and Advanced Placement classes, as well as elective programs that allow students to pursue individual interests. For example, Media Art and Production students work on broadcasts of school events on the school’s YouTube channel.

Shopping centers like Westfield Oakridge and plenty of spots to eat

McKuen is literally surrounded by shopping. On the east, Sunrise Plaza features a Dick’s Sporting Goods and Chavez Supermarket, a large Mexican grocery store. These are joined by other businesses and restaurants like Blossom & Bourbon. On the west, the Santa Teresa Main Street Shopping Center has a FoodMaxx alongside global eateries, including Burma Choice and Chaat Café. Westfield Oakridge Mall is one of the area’s largest shopping options, just northwest of the neighborhood. This expansive complex is anchored by large retailers like Target and Macy’s, while the inside features dozens of outlets and eateries. It’s also home to a movie theater.

Easy access to tennis courts, lakefront activity and hiking

Cahalan Park is the neighborhood’s recreation space, conveniently situated in the community’s southeast corner. Residents can walk to its tennis and basketball courts, and kids can use the shady playground. It also has a baseball diamond. Almaden Lake Park, one of the area’s more popular outdoor spaces, is less than 2 miles southwest. The lake is surrounded by picnic areas, playgrounds and trails. Fishing is available for those with a license, and there’s an amphitheater for concerts. The suburbs end just over 5 miles south of the neighborhood, and the lush Santa Cruz Mountains begin. Almaden Quicksilver County Park provides miles of trails across these hills and canyons. When the ocean calls, surfers can drive 30 miles south to Santa Cruz.

Commute to downtown San Jose on the freeway or the BART

McKuen has easy access to multiple freeways and public transit options. Blossom Hill Road leads east to state Route 85, taking drivers to Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center, the area’s largest hospital, 3 miles east. State Route 87 travels north to Downtown San Jose, less than 8 miles north, and San Jose Mineta International Airport, a few miles farther. Downtown San Jose is a hub for major tech companies, which draw many people to the city. The Bay Area Rapid Transit System rail service goes to all of these locations. There are multiple stops, such as Blossom Hill, within a few minutes’ drive or bus ride of the neighborhood.
