Rose Garden
Eclectic mix of single-family homes
This residential community hosts an array of eclectic homes: Stylized Spanish Revivals, romantic English Tudors and contemporary styles are just some of Rose Garden’s architectural highlights. “Many of the traditional custom-built single-family homes were constructed around the 1930s, and a large portion of the ranch-style residences in this neighborhood started cropping up during the 1960s and 70s,” Moore says. Residents can also find a handful of Craftsman-style properties and Colonial Revivals in this neighborhood, showcasing a true architectural mix. Landscaping is often a key feature for properties here, and neatly trimmed shrubs and well-maintained lawns line Rose Garden’s streets. According to Moore, $5 million homes are often situated along University Avenue, while homes near the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden tend to cost between $1.5 and $2 million.Stroll through the gardens at Rosicrucian Park
Spanning nearly half a dozen acres, the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden is home to thousands of roses in almost 200 varieties. When this area was first developed as a subdivision in the 1930s, the Santa Clara County Rose Society oversaw the creation of the garden in the middle of the neighborhood. “The garden also has a park area where kids play and people often go on picnics,” Moore says. Residents can also find a children’s playground at Hester Park, which is situated right next to the Rose Garden Branch Library. Surrounding the nearby Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum is Rosicrucian Park, where locals can stroll through the Alchemy Garden or Peace Garden before stopping by the Rosicrucian Planetarium to learn about the galaxies above.Shop and dine along The Alameda
“Along the eastern side of the neighborhood is a boulevard called The Alameda, and there are all kinds of local shops, small businesses and dining options along there,” Moore says. Residents can browse salons, jewelry stores, tattoo parlors and more along this busy thoroughfare. Several restaurants also line The Alameda, including Hop & Vine, a rustic-style eatery specializing in serving global wines and craft brews. Less than a block away, locals can dine at Zona Rosa, a restaurant known for its Mexican-fusion cuisine and creative drinks. For a neighborhood eatery offering classic American fare, the Park Station Hashery is located between the Rose Garden and the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum. Residents can do their weekly grocery shopping at Zanotto’s Family Market, located along Naglee Avenue.Performing arts program at Abraham Lincoln High School
Students here are served by the San Jose Unified School District, which receives an overall B-plus rating from Niche. Young learners in kindergarten through fifth grade can attend Merritt Trace Elementary School, a C-plus-rated institution. Students in grades six through eight might then go to Herbert Hoover Middle School, which is rated B-minus and is home to the Historic Hoover Theatre. Secondary students can attend B-plus-rated Abraham Lincoln High School, a magnet school for academic, visual and performing arts; “The school has a really nice theater, so the students there put on a lot of community productions in addition to their other shows,” Moore says.Annual marathon travels through the Rose Garden
“Rose Garden isn’t too far away from the SAP Center, which is where the San Jose Sharks hockey team plays, but it also acts as a concert venue. The center is often called the “Shark Tank” by locals,” Moore says. He also adds that there are several annual events hosted at the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden: “Each fall, the Santa Fe Rock n’ Roll half marathon travels through the garden,” Moore says.Walkable area less than 3 miles from Downtown
Rose Garden rates well in walkability, as sidewalks here are prevalent and well-maintained. Downtown San Jose is located less than 3 miles away, making commuting easy and accessible. “Locals often use busses for public transit, but there’s also a few light rail lines that run through the San Jose area,” Moore says. The Valley Transportation Authority, or VTA, is the mass transit system that operates these services. San Jose Mineta International Airport is an approximately 4-mile drive away. Moore also adds that less than a mile away from the neighborhood is O’Connor Hospital, one of the city’s best medical centers.
