Why Santana Row draws people from across the Silicon Valley

Santana Row in San Jose is a vibrant mixed-use development and major Silicon Valley destination where apartment complexes and homes are just steps away from luxury retailers, trendy restaurants and entertainment. Construction of “The Row,” as it’s called by locals, finished in 2002, and it has since received praise for its modern design, convenient layout and shopping lineup. Nearby tech offices, such as Experian, NetApp data services and Splunk, a Cisco-owned software company, attract young professionals to the area. Community is fostered through events and activities hosted along Santana Row’s main street and Frank M. Santana Park.

Upscale shopping in Santana Row and at Westfield Valley Fair Mall

Between the next-door Westfield Valley Fair Mall and the dozens of stores that line Santana Row’s bustling streets, this neighborhood is a commercial epicenter for San Jose and surrounding cities. "It's the Rodeo Drive of Silicon Valley," says Nick Bettencourt, an experienced Realtor with Compass that sells homes across Silicon Valley. "There are lots of high-end restaurants and shopping options." Some popular Santana Row establishments include:

  • Madewell and LOFT for everyday clothing
  • Athleta and lululemon for trendy athleisure
  • Mejuri for fine jewelry pieces
Across the street is Valley Fair Mall, which Bettencourt says houses dozens of stores, including luxury retailers like Prada, Louis Vuitton and Rolex. Department stores at Valley Fair Mall include Nordstrom, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s.

For a night on the town, residents can head to Fogo de Chao, an upscale Brazilian steakhouse where meat is carved tableside. Down the street is Yard House, a sports bar and popular happy hour spot that serves New American menu items like sliders, wings and cheese curds. Other restaurants in the neighborhood include Pizza Antica, El Jardin Tequila Bar and Zazil, which specializes in traditional Mexican fare. The nearest grocery store is the Grocery Outlet supermarket, located less than a mile south.

Events and activities hosted on The Row

Residents can find year-round events and celebrations at Santana Row Park, like Yoga on The Row every Saturday morning and the Sips & Sounds of Summer Music Series, a free outdoor concert series hosted every Tuesday evening in August and September. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, locals can get into the holiday spirit by celebrating Spirit of The Row each Tuesday in December. "There's a stage in the middle of Santana Row where they often have live music performances," Bettencourt says.

Apartment units and Spanish-style villas

If you're interested in moving to Santana Row, you can rent a unit in one of several apartment complexes, which sit only steps away from businesses. “The main attraction of Santana Row is that you’re living above everything you want or need,” says Jeff Hansen, a Silicon Valley real estate agent with eXp Realty. “The apartment units are great for when you want entertainment or to meet up with friends for a night out without having to drive.” Surrounding The Row, residents can find Spanish-inspired villas in private communities, modern contemporary apartment complexes, Mediterranean-style townhouses and midcentury homes. Most condo units and townhouses sell between $1.3 million and $1.5 million, and single-family homes range from about $1.6 million to $2 million.

Family fun time at Santana/Barrett Parks and Winchester Mystery House

Frank M. Santana Park is a well-maintained 5.3-acre outdoor space with picnic areas, an age-restricted playground and a softball field; the park is also encircled by a paved walking path and sits adjacent to the San Jose Fire Department Station 10. Residents can play life-sized chess at Santana Row Chess Plaza, which features a giant chessboard and game pieces. Less than 2 miles from Santana Row is the Pruneridge Golf Club, a full-service golfing facility with a nine-hole course and a two-story driving range.

Santana Row is across the street from San Jose’s biggest tourist attraction: the Winchester Mystery House. Sarah Winchester purchased the 45-acre property in the late 1880s and built ornate Victorian and Gothic-style additions to the mansion until her death. The continuous building resulted in a massive maze-like layout with bizarre features like stairs that end in a ceiling and doors that lead to nowhere. “The Winchester Mystery House is definitely something to check out... It’s rumored to be haunted, and so Sarah Winchester built onto the house to keep ghosts at bay,” Hansen says.
