Farrelly Pond District

Early 20th-century homes and well-landscaped streetscapes
The Farrelly Pond District is at the city's north edge, bordered by San Leandro’s downtown district to the south and Oakland to the north. Farrelly Pond showcases a mix of single-family homes built in the 1920s and ‘30s. The neighborhood features many bungalows, Craftsman-style homes and the occasional Tudor-style property. The residential streetscapes display landscaped front yards with sprinkles of tall pine trees and palm fronds along the horizon. Many homes have large bay windows, attached garages and fenced-in backyards, often with fruit-bearing trees. Home prices in the neighborhood typically range from $600,000 for smaller, 2-bedroom homes and can go up to $1 million for three-bedroom homes that have been renovated with modern interior features.Longstanding dining establishments and multicultural markets
A few popular eateries are located within or right around Farrelly Pond District, including Fifth Wheel Food. This old-school diner has been open since 1946 and serves traditional breakfast and lunch favorites like classic omelets, pancakes and sandwiches. Nearby is the family-owned Bluebird Pizzeria, which serves New York-style pies and slices. Tacos Mi Reynita is a few blocks out and is the go-to spot for authentic Mexican tacos paired with fresh passion fruit guava juice. Safeway is for everyday groceries and is less than a few miles away across Davis Street. In the neighborhood, Los Pericos Mexican Market offers Mexican grocery items and has an in-house taqueria with burritos and tacos.Cherry festivals and downtown city celebrations
The San Leandro Cherry Festival is the longest-standing city event, where residents can enjoy cherry-themed festivities, including a pie baking contest, pie eating contest and a classic car show. Each December, the neighborhood puts on “It’s a Wonderful Night Holiday Celebration,” which features a tree-lighting ceremony, photos with Santa, train rides and a holiday market. The annual (Re)Discover Downtown event hosts live music, a scavenger hunt, and a Maker’s Market featuring handmade goods and art. "There’s a few nice spots and museums nearby in Old Town, and we have a really popular farmers market right outside of the library from April to October,” says Susan Belchik, a longtime area resident and librarian at the nearby San Leandro Library. “It’s a very family-friendly area, and there’s always huge attendance around here for any community event.” The San Leandro Library also hosts multiple events throughout the year, from a community parade festival to Murder Mystery Nights for teens and monthly book clubs for adults.Public schools with dual enrollment offerings
Students can attend Washington Elementary School followed by Bancroft Middle School, both of which get a B-minus rating from Niche. San Leandro High School gets a B rating and offers an extensive lineup of AP classes along with Dual Enrollment classes in partnership with nearby Chabot College.Modern playscapes at Siempre Verde Park
The neighborhood’s main park is Siempre Verde Park, which lives up to the green scenery promised by its name. Within walking distance from many homes in the neighborhood, it features curved footpaths that wind around its modern, innovative playgrounds, athletic courts and gardens. For a more expansive place to roam, Oakland Hills is just a few miles east. Residents can hike through the dense redwood groves and wooded vistas at Reinhardt Regional Redwood Reserve or Anthony Chabot Regional Park. Both offer some of the best trails in the East Bay. San Leandro Root Park is located directly south of the neighborhood, right next to San Leandro Creek, and has vast green spaces for all recreational possibilities.Multiple public transportation options and nearby Oakland airport
The neighborhood is conveniently located next to Route 185 for getting around the city, and multiple bus stops are located around its borders. The San Leandro BART station is within walking distance of Farrelly Pond District, making commuting and traveling around the Bay Area easy. For domestic or international flights, the Oakland International Airport is conveniently located just under four miles west.
