Mulford Gardens is lined with paved sidewalks that offer easy navigation around the neighborhood and to nearby retailers, schools and parks. The community has a mix of architectural styles, including Tudor Revival, Craftsman and contemporary and traditional ranch-style homes. Lot sizes can run small, and houses sit close together, but the properties still offer modest front and back yard spaces. Some residences have more extensive landscaping, while others have widened driveways to accommodate two vehicles. There are also a few bayfront properties. There are many popular Mexican restaurants within the neighborhood, including El Torito along the bay and Porque No? Tacos off Marina Boulevard. Horatio's off Monarch Bay Drive is an upscale waterfront steakhouse with ample outdoor seating looking out at the bay. The neighborhood’s Los Pericos Market has a small assortment of grocery items, while Safeway and Foodmaxx are less than a few miles south along Interstate 880. For more shopping, Walmart is located just north, and the Marina Square Center is east, across Interstate 880. This large shopping center has many big box national stores like Nordstrom Rack and Gap.Public schools with dual enrollment classes
Students may attend Garfield Elementary School, which gets a C-plus rating from Niche, followed by the B-rated John Muir Middle School. The B-rated San Leandro High School offers dual enrollment courses and a regional occupational program for entry-level career and technical training.Waterside parks and public golf courses
The San Leandro Marina sits on the neighborhood's western side, with boat docks and a fishing pier along the bay. The Marina Golf Course offers a 9-hole course, while the more extensive, 18-hole public course at the Monarch Bay Golf Club is right outside the neighborhood. The Marina Park is a 30-acre green space along the San Francisco Bay, with a playground, resting areas and a mile-long paved path that runs through the park. Less than a mile north is the expansive Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline. This waterfront park offers a looped trail with bay views and a disc golf course. It’s also a popular spot for birdwatching.Next to Interstate 880 and close to the Oakland International Airport
Interstate 880 borders the neighborhood's eastern side. It is a major highway that leads into Oakland and connects to Interstate 80, which directs drivers into San Francisco. The San Leandro BART station is just outside the neighborhood, with a convenient parking lot. The expansive Kaiser Permanente San Leandro Medical Center is within Mulford Gardens, while the San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport is conveniently located less than a few miles north.Community walks at Marina Park and downtown festivals
Nearby Marina Park is a popular spot for community gatherings throughout the year, with free outdoor exercise sessions, community walk events and dog park meet-ups. Downtown San Leandro is less than three miles east for even more annual events. The San Leandro Cherry Festival is the longest-standing city event taking place in June, where residents can enjoy cherry-themed festivities, including a pie baking and pie eating contest, plus a classic car show. The annual (Re)Discover Downtown event in September has live music, a scavenger hunt and a Maker’s Market featuring handmade goods and art.
