Terra Linda

Homes inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright
Most of the community’s ranch-style homes rose between 1950 and 1970, as builders and architects were inspired to incorporate then-trendy design elements such as open beam ceilings, high windows, concrete slab foundations and cork floors. Situated within San Rafael, Terra Linda is across from the landmark Marin County Civic Center designed by American architect and designer Frank Lloyd Wright, whose work influenced Joseph Eichler, a prolific California real estate developer who built hundreds of Terra Linda’s homes. For homes with three or four bedrooms, expect to pay between $1.4 million and $1.8 million.Santa Margarita Park and Terra Linda Preserve
Residents enjoy their community and its picturesque landscape by hiking or bike riding through the hills of the Terra Linda/Sleepy Hollow Preserve, a more than 1,000-acre natural area filled with coyote brush, valley oak and California bay trees. The smaller Santa Margarita Park features a tennis court, playground and a picnic area large enough for two dozen people.Marin County Fair
While Architectural Digest readers marvel at Marin County Civic Center's distinct blue roof and pink grounds, the annual fireworks show and carnival rides at the Marin County Fair next to it illuminate the night and bring joy to thousands of people in the community. Across the duck pond behind the government complex, the county fairgrounds include the 2,000-sweat Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium, the smaller Showcase Theater that fits 348 people, and a children's playground.Kaiser Permanente and Northgate Mall
Next to Vallecito sits a big local employer, the Kaiser Permanente San Rafael Medical Center. Terra Linda residents shop and see movies at the Northgate Mall, an enclosed shopping center anchored by a Macy’s, a Kohl’s and a Century Theatres multiplex. Groceries are available at the Safeway supermarket in a shopping center adjacent to the mall. Still, Scotty’s Market, in a smaller neighborhood retail center, is also a popular destination for necessities and deli sandwiches. While neighbors often run into each other at the market, The Monk’s Kettle, just a few steps away, is where they most often gather and unwind. The second location of a San Francisco establishment, it's a family-friendly neighborhood tavern that’s big on craft beer and grown-up comfort food with a menu that includes a fried chicken sandwich with celery apple slaw, shakshuka with an option to add grilled Halloumi cheese, and a roasted mackerel sandwich on a torpedo bun.Technical courses at Terra Linda High School
There are three elementary school options in the Miller Creek School District, including Vallecito, which has an A rating on Niche. The school's official concept is that playing helps children build independent thinking and a can-do attitude. Students can go on to Miller Creek Middle School, which sits just northeast of the neighborhood and has an A Niche rating. Terra Linda High School, which gets an A-minus on Niche, is less than a mile from Vallecito Elementary. In addition to traditional academics, the high school offers career-oriented technical courses in engineering, graphic design, filmmaking and auto repair.Bus stops and I-580
The Marin County Transit District operates local buses. From Terra Linda, drivers can take U.S. Route 101 -- either 35 miles north to Santa Rosa or 21 miles south to San Francisco. Another option, before reaching the Golden City, is to veer east on Interstate 580 and cross the San Francisco Bay toward Oakland and Fremont.
