A vibrant multicultural community along the Mexican border
Home to the busiest port of entry in the Western Hemisphere, San Ysidro is often referred to as the Gateway to the Americas; but this vibrant community is much more than a simple crossroads between San Diego and Tijuana. The neighborhood is a self-proclaimed sanctuary city where people from all over the world are welcomed with open arms. Residents live in Spanish-style homes situated between Interstate 805 and Interstate 5, overlooking the San Ysidro Mountains. While its location on the Mexican border has posed different challenges over the years, long-standing local organizations and city officials have played a large role in creating solutions to these issues. Whether it’s quality youth programs, multilingual healthcare or affordable housing, San Ysidro is constantly working to meet the community’s unique needs.

Spanish-style homes overlook the San Ysidro Mountains
Concrete sidewalks climb up gently sloping residential streets, offering panoramic views of the San Ysidro Mountain range. Most homes were built during the 1980s and reflect the area’s Spanish influence. Terracotta roofs and sturdy stucco walls protect homes from frequent wildfires during the summer months. Home styles range from Spanish Revival townhomes to two-story Mission Revivals, with several two-bedroom condos available as well. Because of the area’s dry climate, yards typically feature concrete hardscapes embellished with cacti and palm trees of all shapes and sizes. San Ysidro’s detached homes list between $700,000 and $900,000, while townhomes and condos typically range from $300,000 to $500,000.

Next door, La Bodeguita is just one of the neighborhood’s corner markets, packed with all the everyday necessities. Home to the busiest port of entry in America
The San Ysidro Port of Entry is one of the busiest land border crossings in the world, with Interstate 5 linking to Mexican Federal Highway 1. On either side of the 34-lane freeway, two pedestrian walkways take residents through Customs and Border Protection into Tijuana. San Ysidro Station sits adjacent to the eastern walkway. From here, international commuters can ride into Downtown Tijuana or take the blue trolley line north to the San Diego Airport. San Ysidro’s Health Center sits on the north side of the neighborhood between State Route 905 and Beyer Boulevard.

Challenges along the Mexican Border
San Ysidro’s location on the Mexican border has led to some challenges for the community. Cartels have historically used part of Tijuana River Valley Regional Park as a scouting and entry location. In recent years, a 14-mile-long border wall has been built to help prevent illegal entry and drug smuggling. Additionally, a large migrant camp sits between the primary and secondary border walls in the East Valley desert, just outside the park. Local immigrant rights groups and community volunteers are currently working to supply water, food and other necessities to the camp.

I appreciate the fact that everything we need is nearby. It is a relatively safe area if you do not go looking for trouble itself. If you stay out of where you know that problems may arise, you will live safely and peacefully.

The general atmosphere is nice because the residents are friendly. I also like how we live right next to the border so we are able to cross back and forth as we wish. I love how the area is so diverse. There are different cultures and religions that reside in the area. Despite what most people think of the San Ysidro Community, I wouldn't change it for the world.

It is very quiet, it is close to Mexico, it is a developing area. About 25-30 minutes from downtown San Diego. Have to have a vehicle, limited public transportation. Relatively affordable compared to other areas of San Diego.
