Hope
Midcentury homes on tightly packed sloping streets
Hope offers diverse architectural styles, including ranch, craftsman, Spanish and Tudor Revivals lined by winding, steeply sloped streets, with most homes dating back to the early to mid-20th century. Buyers can expect a three-bedroom ranch-style home on the neighborhood’s south side to sell for around $1.5 million, while prices increase steadily and rise to over $3 million for a five-bedroom Spanish Revival-style property set further north on half-acre lots. Two-bedroom townhomes and condos on the neighborhood’s south side often sell for between $900,000 and $1.5 million. “The market is slow all over Santa Barbara, including the Hope area, because there is just a lack of inventory,” Bowe says. Dense shrubbery and diverse foliage line flat cement sidewalks and bike lanes on either side of the street, which skaters and bikers can use to explore the neighborhood while taking in the mountain views.A-rated schools in the Hope Elementary School District
Hope is zoned for the Hope Elementary School District from kindergarten until sixth grade, where students may attend Hope Elementary, a school located within the neighborhood that receives an A-minus from Niche. Hope Elementary School District is supported by the Friends of Hope School Foundation, a local nonprofit that raises money to support technology upgrades, teacher funds and other programs. Following sixth grade, children will enter the Santa Barbara Unified School District, with schools like the A-rated La Colina Junior High and Santa Barbara Senior High. Santa Barbara High is California's third oldest high school, founded in 1875, and offers more than 50 clubs, including Girls Who Code, Mock Trial and Film Production Club.Hiking though the San Marcos Foothills Preserve
Los Robles Park is the main neighborhood park, offering open grassy meadows where residents can lay in the sun or sit in the shade of tall oak trees. Spanning 200 acres on Hope’s north side, the San Marcos Foothills Preserve consists of grasslands and oak canyons populated with local wildlife like hawks, roadrunners, and bobcats. Ten acres of the preserve are open for light-impact recreation, including hiking, bird watching, and on-leash dog walking.Grocery stores, retailers and restaurants at La Cumbre Plaza
Residents can scratch their retail therapy itch at La Cumbre Plaza, a shopping mall located just south of Hope that houses grocery stores like Whole Foods and Bristol Farms, as well as chain retailers like Macy’s. Shoppers can take a break to enjoy one of the plaza’s restaurants, including the family-owned Lure Fish House, which serves locally sourced seafood and produce. Other nearby restaurants include Chucks of Hawaii, which has served the community since 1967 and is known for its steak and Mai Tais.Busing around Santa Barbara and local bike lanes
U.S. Route 101 runs along Hope’s southern border, lining the Pacific coastline and connecting residents to downtown Santa Barbara, 5 miles away, and to Los Angeles, 96 miles away. The Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District’s bus system has two routes that make stops in Hope; Route 4 can take passengers downtown, while Route 7 stretches out 5 miles west to Goleta. Bike lanes along major throughways and well-maintained sidewalks make it easy for residents to get around the immediate area without a car. Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital is about 4 miles away, while Santa Barbara Airport is less than 7 miles away.Outreach and fundraising events at the Trinity Community Gardens
For those with green thumbs, Trinity Gardens is a community space opened by the Trinity Lutheran Church in 2012. Here, residents can grow produce on individual lots or tend the row crops, which are donated to local organizations. The organization hosts plenty of outreach events, including a pumpkin patch during Halloween, an annual Easter egg hunt and Renaissance in the Garden, a themed fundraiser with food, music and flower crown making.
