An equestrian community in the seaside hills of Santa Barbara
With a gorgeous hillside location on the Pacific coast, the Hope Ranch community in Santa Barbara truly delivers when it comes to majestic seaside views and upscale living.
Rising with the sun each morning, Hope Ranch residents are likely to hear clopping horse hooves just as often as cars motoring through the neighborhood's narrow, winding roads on a bluff between the shore and the hills of the Santa Ynez Mountain range. With the sun shining almost all year round – an average of more than 300 days per year – folks in Hope Ranch enjoy strolling down to the community's private-access beach to surf, swim and sunbathe. "It's not as equestrian as it used to be, but it's a lot like Rolling Hills Estates in Los Angeles," says Steve Epstein, a local Keller Williams real estate agent who has lived in the Santa Barbara area since 1963. "It definitely still has a lot of horses though. And it's nice because you can drive right down to the sand and unload a kayak or paddleboard."

Golfing at La Cumbre Country Club and miles of horseback riding trails
In the late 1800s, ranchers allowed sheep to roam the area's oak and palm-studded hills and graze on its chaparral shrubs. More than a century later, as the area has developed into an upscale suburb, Hope Ranch now features nearly two dozen miles of crisscrossing horse trails. The Soleado Stables at Rancho Asoleado offer horse boarding with extensive security measures. Under a partnership with Ridgewood Farms, the ranch also provides equestrian training classes to teach children and adults horseback riding. Established in 1907, the La Cumbre Country Club in Hope Ranch has grown to include a striking 18-hole golf course, six tennis courts, a crystal-blue pool and indoor-outdoor dining spaces. The private club regularly hosts events that range from bridge tournaments to seasonal galas. The golf course is known for its skill-testing layout and gorgeous landscaping, carefully maintained and preserved to inspire golfers, painters and photographers. In addition to the country club, the neighborhood includes tennis courts maintained under HOA fees that residents pay to live in the neighborhood.
