Established Southside suburb with a strong sense of community
Las Acequias is an established suburb convenient to the growing shopping centers and highways of Southside Santa Fe. Once part of the 16th-century farming village of Agua Fria, Las Acequias was eventually developed in the 1980s and ‘90s around its namesake park, catering to the blue-collar residents of the City Different with its area-affordable homes and 6-mile commute to Downtown Santa Fe. “We’re the working- and middle-class people of Santa Fe,” says Fabian Trujillo, who’s been president of the Las Acequias Neighborhood Association for over 8 years. “We’re the government workers for the city and even Los Alamos to the north. We all want a safe place to live that’s easy to commute to work from.” Since its inception in the 1980s, Las Acequias has created a strong sense of community, with events throughout the year and a dedicated volunteer team at the Las Acequias Neighborhood Association. “The events we host always bring the community together,” Trujillo says. “We also work with other neighborhood associations in Southside to make sure our neighborhood is a better place to live.”

Turn-of-the-century Santa Fe homes
On sidewalk-lined streets, homes in Las Acequias were built in the Santa Fe style between the 1980s and early 2000s; common features include earth-tone stucco exteriors, turquoise trim and shared carports with neighbors. Most sit on lots of 5,000 to 10,000 square feet, with fenced-in backyards with tool sheds and gardens, and front yards with tidy gravel landscaping. “We like to encourage people to maintain and beautify their homes,” Trujillo says. “We have a front yard judging contest, and we help people cut their weeds and ensure our front yards are maintained.” Homes here can be one or two stories. One-story homes come in one- to four-bedroom floorplans and range from $280,000 to $465,000, with lot size and bedroom count shaping prices. Two-story homes can have between three- and five-bedroom layouts and range from $490,000 to $520,000, also due to lot size and bedroom count.

Surrounded by Santa Fe thoroughfares and highways
Las Acequias sits at the intersection of the Airport Road and Cerrillos Road. Cerrillos Road leads 6 miles north to Downtown Santa Fe, and Airport Road leads to St. Francis Drive, another major road to the city. Las Acequias also sits 2 miles north of Interstate 25 and 2 miles south of New Mexico State Road 599; NM-599 helps Los Alamos-bound commuters skip the downtown traffic to drive 43 miles north to the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Being surrounded by major routes can bring heavy traffic through the neighborhood, but according to Trujillo, the neighborhood association works closely with the city and police department to ensure commuters drive slowly and safely through the neighborhood. Although most locals rely on cars to get around, Santa Fe Trails buses stop along Airport Road, and Rufina Street is lined with clearly marked bike lanes. The Presbyterian Santa Fe Medical Center is 2 miles south, and the Santa Fe Regional Airport is 4 miles west.
Southside’s skyrocketing shopping and dining scene
Las Acequias sits amid Southside Santa Fe’s rapidly growing commercial corridors, with the shopping centers along Cerrillos Road less than a mile away. “The neighborhood association is always trying to promote commercial development around the community,” says Trujillo. The Plaza Santa Fe shopping center is home to Albertsons Market, Target and Sam’s Club grocery stores, as well as a Best Buy electronics store. The San Isidro Plaza sits just across the street from these stores, and the Plaza Cafe Southside here has become one of the most popular eateries in the city; diners here can enjoy all-day breakfasts amid the restaurant's colorful leather booths and moody neon lights. The Santa Fe Place Mall is also near the Airport Road-Cerrillos Road intersection; it houses over 80 retailers, including a World Market furniture store and an outlet for the regional Boot Barn chain.

Las Acequias Park and open desert spaces
Spanning over 6 acres, Las Acequias Park forms the literal and figurative center of the neighborhood, its tree-shaded fields often busy with picnics, cookouts and small community get-togethers. Paved trails wind between the park’s canopied playgrounds, shade structure and basketball court. Mosaic sculptures mark the entrance to the park and pay homage to the neighborhood’s history as a farming village. A stretch of open desert space forms the neighborhood’s western boundary, its unmarked dirt trails often used by dog walkers and joggers.
Community celebrations, Holiday festivities and more
The Las Acequias Neighborhood Association hosts small events throughout the year to celebrate the community. Hosted every other summer at Las Acequias Park, Las Acequias Community Day is the neighborhood’s largest event, attracting residents to learn more about the area’s history and close relationship with the Santa Fe Police and Fire Departments, according to Trujillo. During the Holiday season, the neighborhood association also gathers local volunteers to decorate their homes with colorful lights and go Christmas caroling. “Our holiday festivities are pretty robust,” Trujillo says. “It’s something we look forward to and are known for.”
