Tesuque
Sprawling Santa Fe and North New Mexico homes
Narrow streets and dirt paths branch off the scenic Bishops Lodge Road, leading to large private estates and to gated subdevelopments like Tesuque Ridge Ranch. Santa Fe-style mansions from the 1920s through 2010s can be found throughout Tesuque, often featuring functioning vigas, flat roofs and ornamented parapets. “A lot of the houses are made with real adobe and not stucco, which is really great for insulation and the weather extremes out here,” Knouse says. Most homes are built into Tesuque’s desert hills and are surrounded by acres of ponderosa pines and piñon trees; others sit secluded in densely forested meadows with manicured lawns and garden spaces.Santa Fe-style homes start at $820,000 for four-bedroom properties set close to their neighbors, and range to $6 million for five-bedroom mansions with vast acreage and plenty of privacy. A handful of Northern New Mexico-style homes can also be found in the Tesuque Canyon area, featuring rambling one-story layouts, bright stucco exteriors and pitched metal roofs. These homes sit on private, closely manicured lots covered with shrubs and cottonwood trees; three-bedrooms with guesthouses start at $2.3 million, while four-bedrooms on 3-acre lots go for up to $4.6 million. Large swaths of land remain undeveloped in Tesuque. Small lots under a quarter-acre and close to neighbors can go for $75,000, while 40 acres of secluded desert hills can fetch $3.2 million.
Local Santa Fe Public Schools
Local kids can start at Tesuque Elementary, which earns a C from Niche, and can continue to C-minus-rated Milagro Middle. Santa Fe High earns an A-minus; in 2021, the boys’ soccer team here won their first-ever state championship.Creek-side trails and sculpture gardens
Tall modernist and indigenous statues dot the Glenn Green Galleries and Sculpture Garden’s tree-shaded fields. Inside the gallery, a large collection of Rodger Jacobsen sculptures and Rodney Forbes paintings await art lovers. Off Bishops Lodge Road, the Tesuque Creek Trail runs nearly 4 miles along the Tesuque Creek, shaded by juniper trees and ponderosa pines, before looping back to Bishops Lodge Road. "It's a great little place to walk because of the water, and people like to bring their dogs out there," Knouse says.Local markets, glassworks and eateries
Since 1989, the Tesuque Village Market has been the community’s one-stop shop for New Mexican food, beer, pastries and home goods. “It’s like a mini grocery store, restaurant, bar and bakery, all in one,” Knouse says. Paintings of calaveras and Tesuque Pueblo decorate the market’s tin-and-adobe walls; inside, diners can enjoy tortilla soup and drinks at the bar as shoppers browse the wine room. Upscale Italian restaurant El Nido uses its wood-fire grill to give their limoncello chicken and wagyu burgers a slightly smokey flavor. Since 1975, Tesuque Glassworks has supported local artists and sold glassware ranging from ornate vases to sculptures of buffalo. Locals can also head 6 miles south to Downtown Santa Fe and the Railyard Arts District for additional shopping and dining options, and on weekends, the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market.Highway 84 access and scenic thoroughfares
Highway 84 forms Tesuque’s western border and leads commuters to downtown and the Santa Fe Plaza 6 miles south. Bishops Lodge Road and Tesuque Village Road are the community’s main thoroughfares, and the latter is dotted with Santa Fe Trails bus stops. The Christus St. Vincent Regional Hospital is 6 miles south, and the Santa Fe Regional Airport is 15 miles west.Santa Fe Opera
At Tesuque’s western edge, the outdoor Santa Fe Opera sits atop a scenic hillside. “It’s a really famous place in Santa Fe, and they host at least five shows there every summer,” Knouse says. Most shows are standard opera repertoire, running each year from late June to the third week of August.
