South Whittier is a suburban neighborhood about 15 miles from LA

South Whittier, in an area between Los Angeles and Anaheim, is a calm retreat from the city activity nearby. Distant vistas of rolling hills and mountains add a sense of tranquility. About 5 miles to the northeast is the Arroyo Pescadero Trailhead, which, along with Whittier Turnbull Canyon Hiking Trail and other outdoor destinations, give area residents nearby connections with nature.

Midcentury homes, condos and townhouses in South Whittier

Along South Whittier's residential streets you’ll pass palms, oaks and cypress trees. Many homes, including early 20th-century or midcentury models, are flanked by decorative walls or fencing. Bernadette Ramirez, Realtor with PLF Real Estate Solutions, says, "Price points start at $600,000; that's lower than in other areas of Whittier." The low end might be for two-bedroom houses. Typically, costs increase in tandem with square footage. Homes of over 2,500 square feet can go for as high as $1.2 million.

Along with condos, townhouses are in the range of $375,000 to $800,000. Ramirez explains that many homebuyers purchase a duplex to live in one side and rent out the other. They start at about $700,000 and have built-in investment value as income-producing properties.

Schools from Los Altos Elementary to California High

Public schools include Los Altos Elementary, which has a Spanish dual language immersion program and Richard L. Graves Middle School, which offers electives like journalism, Spanish and band. California High School, or “Cal High,” features five career academies and was graded B+ by Niche.

Recreation at Amelia Mayberry Park and Candlewood Country Club

When it's time for an outing, head to Amelia Mayberry Park, a 14-acre destination for all-age enjoyment. Meet up with friends for a round of basketball, or the kids can explore the playground and skate park, or, if it's hot out, cool down at the splash pad. The park is a participating site in the County of Los Angeles Parks and Recreation's Parks After Dark program, with music, dance and free activities. If you are a golfer, Candlewood Country Club has membership options that give you access to the course and amenities like a fitness center, bar, and outdoor terrace for dining.

Gateway Plaza retail, including Loroco Bistro

Plan to knock out the grocery shopping list unless you’re ready to eat first. There are lots of options in the area. Gateway Plaza is brimming with retail, with big-box stores and other shops. Loroco Bistro is a favorite for Salvadoran cuisine, like pupusas and salpicón.

About 15 miles to downtown LA and more transportation

Via the Norwalk/South Whittier Station, you’ll have easy access to Metrolink, and since Interstate 5 and State Route 72 are close by, getting everywhere is simple. Offering a prime location between LA and Disneyland and with appealing outdoor destinations nearby, South Whittier provides a bunch of benefits.
