Northwest Santa Maria
Taking advantage of Santa Maria’s park system
At 40 acres, Preisker Park is the largest recreational space in the city. The park is a nesting place for Lawrence's Goldfinches and is home to over 100 varieties of trees. Residents visit Preisker Park for games in the open field, disc golf and the accessible walking path. The grounds also contain three playgrounds, including a replica of the famous Santa Maria ship. Along the community's northern border is the Santa Maria Levee Trail, where some locals can see views of the valley right from their homes. Grogan Park is a smaller gathering spot with walking paths and open spaces. North Preisker Ranch Park rests next to one of the neighborhood's schools; locals can use the tennis and basketball courts when the school is not in session. Athletes head to Atkinson Park and Oakley Park for the sporting courts and fields. Veteran Memorial Park is currently under construction and will feature upgrades to play equipment and a commemorative plaza that connects to the Veteran Memorial Center next door.Sidewalks hemmed with homes from the midcentury to the early 2000s
The neighborhood's residential properties fit into tidy grid-line streets with sidewalks suitable for joggers and bicyclists. Most Northwest Santa Maria homes were constructed from the midcentury to the early 2000s. These houses have several exterior materials, such as board and batten, brick facades and paneling. The area has cul-de-sacs arranged with established ranch styles and rows of contemporary dwellings. Buyers can also find manufactured homes inside Rancho Buena Vista Mobile Estates, a golf course community. Casa Grande Mobile Estates offers residents a 55-plus community. On average, manufactured homes typically enter the market between $150,000 and $250,000. A single-family house in Northwest Santa Maria can sell between $475,000 and $625,000.Taking to Main Street and Highway 135
Shoppers can restock home supplies at Walmart Neighborhood Market or pick up produce and Latin-based pantry items at Vallarta Supermarkets. The active business routes, Main Street and Highway 135, lead customers to storefronts and restaurants. Brown recommends the local steakhouse Shaw's Restaurant. Also known as Shaw's Steakhouse, the dining spot is popular for its Santa Maria-style barbecue offerings. Taco trucks are found in the neighborhood and all over the city.Students attend one of the seven public schools
Juan Pacifico Ontiveros Elementary opens its doors for kindergarten to sixth graders and has a C-plus from Niche. The school promises students a broad-based curriculum focusing on a wide range of disciplines, including math, health, science, as well as visual and performing arts. The community contains three additional elementary locations, including Fairlawn, Robert Bruce, and Calvin C. Oakley Elementary, all of which have C-minus grades on Niche. Tommie Kunst Junior High receives a C-plus grade while El Camino Junior High earns a C. Ninth to twelfth graders attend Pioneer Valley High, considered among the top high schools in the county, with a B grade from Niche.Getting around Santa Barbara County
"Highway 135 used to be called Broadway, and there are country roads that go to the hills. If you go 20 minutes south, there's an Air Force base," Brown says. Highway 135 loops from Route 101, which leads to the rest of Santa Barbara County. Commuters may travel locally on the Santa Maria Area Transit or take the Santa Maria Regional Transit to nearby areas. The Santa Maria Public Airport sits about 5 miles south. Dignity Health's Marian Regional Medical Center, the closest hospital, stands on Main Street.Golfing and games at Boomers! Park
