Saratoga Foothills sits in the shade of the Santa Cruz Mountains
Bordered by the Santa Cruz Mountains on one side and Historic Saratoga Village on the other, Saratoga Foothills offers access to top-notch wineries and hiking trails, along with larger lots and better views than neighboring communities. “The weather is fantastic,” says Tiger Teerlink, a resident of Saratoga for over 65 years, local Realtor at Compass and former president of the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce. “We have natural air conditioning coming off of the San Francisco Bay in the summer, and in the winter, we’re sheltered by the foothills. It’s not too hot, not too cold, perfect for growing grapes.” Though residents benefit from a more rural setting, they still have easy access to well-rated schools, popular restaurants and larger cities in the Bay Area.
Ranch-style homes and custom builds with larger lots
The neighborhood’s east side is more densely developed, while the west side sits at a higher elevation with better views, larger lots and narrow, winding roads. Most homes were built in the mid-to-late 20th century, including many ranch-style homes and contemporary builds with tall windows and wide balconies. Lots tend to be spacious, starting at around a quarter-acre, with many mature pine and sycamore trees. “In the past, homes have often included small vineyards and/or horse boarding facilities. There were larger lots, often irregularly shaped with 2 to 5 acres,” Teerlink says. “That is slowly changing as the prices go up and large parcels are being split up and developed.” Home prices typically range from $3.5 million to $5 million, depending on factors such as home size, lot size and scenic views. Larger custom estates with unique French Colonial-influenced architecture, some featuring half- or full-acre lots, can range from $5.5 million to $6.3 million. Newer properties with over an acre of land can range from $7.5 million to $7.8 million. The neighborhood receives a Cap Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, compared to a national score of 4.
Scenic hiking trails and fishing at Stevens Creek County Park
There are miles of multiuse trails through dense woodlands farther up in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve has equestrian and hiking trails, while Fremont Older Open Space Preserve also has designated biking paths and permits dogs as long as they’re leashed. Stevens Creek County Park is situated on the banks of a large reservoir, where visitors can go fishing or boating. The private Saratoga Country Club, also high in the foothills, features an 18-hole golf course and six lighted tennis and pickleball courts. Wildwood Park is a more centrally located community space, found along Sarasota Creek in the Historic Saratoga Village. The park has playgrounds and a sand volleyball court, surrounded by mature shade trees.
Well-regarded public schools score in the A range
Saratoga Elementary, which earns an A from Niche, has an active school garden where students can grow flowers and some produce. At the A-rated Redwood Middle, the PTA sponsors extracurricular activities, including a robotics team, a garden club and an annual musical. The A-plus-rated Saratoga High offers career-oriented pathways in partnership with the Silicon Valley Career Technical Education campus. Enrolled students are bused to the satellite campus for half of the school day, and study subjects like vehicle maintenance, veterinary science or mobile app design.
Lots of wineries, plus restaurants in the Historic Saratoga Village
Several wineries are set higher up in the foothills, offering scenic views and wine tastings. The Mountain Winery is open for tastings on the weekends, also doubling as a performance venue that hosts a range of concerts and comedians every summer. Historic Saratoga Village, the town’s downtown corridor, is centered nearby on Big Basin Way and lined with a variety of local restaurants, cafes and bars. Bella Saratoga serves Italian dishes within a converted Victorian home, while Mint Leaf Cuisine is a popular destination for Thai food. Safeway is the nearest grocery store.
About a 15-mile commute to San Jose
Saratoga Foothills is about 15 miles outside of San Jose, and close to major highways like state routes 9 and 85. Valley Transportation Authority operates local bus routes. El Camino Health Los Gatos Hospital is about 5 miles away, while San Jose Mineta International Airport is about 15 miles away.
