Sardinia, a rural town of tight-knit neighbors
In the town of Sardinia, horses pulling buggies and cattle grazing on rolling pastures aren’t an uncommon sight, as this rural town is mainly known for its farming and slow-paced living. Established in 1921, this community is found 37 miles southeast of downtown Buffalo, farther inland to where hilltops start becoming more of a frequent view. With a small main hub where the town hall resides, Sardinia spreads itself over 50 square miles with a population that doesn't quite crest 3,000. Never far from a familiar face or a long-standing local business, residents enjoy seemingly unlimited green space and a quiet atmosphere, while the outdoors has plenty to offer for maintained recreation.
Acreage abound and historic homes in Sardinia
One of Sardinia’s biggest appeals is the amount of acreage and residential privacy available for those living there. Many residents have had family living in Sardinia for generations, and overall, there isn’t much new construction going on. Not to say it isn’t possible – contemporary homes have certainly entered the market in the last few years, but there’s more focus on maintaining and restoring the properties that already exist, some dating back to the late 18th century. Common architectural styles include the classic ranch home and ever-stylish Cape Cod, alongside authentic Colonial homes. The median selling price for single-family homes is $195,000, and properties typically come with half to a full acre, minimum. Three or four-bedroom homes that have been fully restored or kept in immaculate condition can often spike to $280,000.

Fishing at Cattaraugus Creek and more in the outdoors
Much of the green space has a purpose as farmland or is owned to be someone’s backyard, but Sardinia has still made sure there’s a multi-purpose area for residents. The Town of Sardinia Veteran's Park is a staple for the community’s recreation, with a large playground for the kids, an exercise zone, an outdoor pool and several athletic fields. Locals will stroll the paved walking paths morning or night and rally on the pickleball courts as others eat lunch in the gazebo. The scenic Cattaraugus Creek is also designated as a public fishing area, so many will grab their bait and rods to see what they can catch, while others may choose to head to the north of the town and try the challenging turf of Rolling Hills Par 3 Golf Course.

Local businesses serve their neighbors in Sardinia
Sardinia is bare bones when it comes to essentials, offering residents gas stations, the local Buckwheat’s Garden Center and small mechanic shops. The neighboring areas of Yorkshire and Springville provide big-name stops to Sardinia residents, such as a Walmart Supercenter, Aldi and Walgreens. Yorkshire connects to Springville by Rute 39, and there are restaurants and bars along the way, but Sardinia has loyal customers at its hometown establishments. Fitzy’s Bar and Grill is a popular place for residents to hang out, enjoying a burger and drinks while they watch whatever game is currently making the biggest buzz.

Children often are zoned to the Yorkshire-Pioneer Central School District. One common pipeline has them starting at Pioneer Arcade Elementary before moving on to Pioneer Middle, both of which receive an overall B on Niche but an A-minus for teachers. The final step is taken at Pioneer Senior High, graded with a B-plus on Niche. Heading in and out of town via Route 16
The main roads in Sardinia are Springville Sardinia Highway and Route 16, crucial to getting to other towns and the 37 miles north to downtown Buffalo. As it is an extremely rural area, Sardinia is majorly car-dependent.
