High on a hill
Gatewood is the highest point in Seattle, offering spectacular views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains to the west. From the top, the neighborhood slopes down to bustling California Avenue, where many shops and restaurants are located. In addition to the views, a big draw to the area is Lincoln Park, about a 2-mile drive via local roads. "[The park has] 1 to 1½ miles of waterfront for people to enjoy and lots of amenities," says John L. Scott Real Estate Realtor Jonn McYnturff, who lives in the northwestern section of Seattle. The neighborhood is also 2 miles from the Fauntleroy-Southworth Ferry, which takes locals to Vashon Island and the Kitsap Peninsula.
A tree-scaped neighborhood
Just 7 miles south of Downtown Seattle, Gatewood offers a mix of residences and architectural styles. There are single-family homes as well as newly constructed condos and apartment buildings. Many homes date back to the first half of the 20th century. Ranging from Strawberry box and ranch-style to larger, multistory contemporary designs, prices run from $326,000 to $2.4 million. Gatewood houses are built close together and yard space is around 1/8 of an acre. Most homes have garages. Gatewood comprises flat areas with wide streets and sidewalks, as well as hilly regions with narrow winding roads that lack sidewalks. The entire neighborhood is enveloped by majestic Douglas fir trees.

Beaches and woodland
Locals refer to Lincoln Park, less than ¼ mile walk via surface streets, as Seattle's most multipurpose park, Hines says. The amenities include a play area, hiking trails, bike trails, a boat launch and picnic sites. Lowman Beach Park is situated along a small stretch of the shore and includes swings, open lawn space and a rocky beach from which locals can launch hand-carried boats. Further east are Pelly Place Natural Area and the Orchard Street Ravine, secluded refuges with hiking trails. Myrtle Reservoir Park, at the neighborhood's eastern border, includes a playground and pathways for walking. It also provides a prime view of the Seattle skyline.

California Avenue has a lot to offer
Residents can walk or drive to West Seattle Thriftway on surface streets only .6 of a mile away. The market/restaurant sells a broad selection of products and has a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. California Avenue Southwest is a hub for food and drink. Peel & Press offers stone-fired pizzas and cocktails made with fresh-pressed juice. "Whisky West is a fun place to stop at," McYnturff says. This local watering hole offers a large selection of whiskey in addition to sandwiches, burgers, and more.
The junctions present annual festivals
Morgan Junction and Alaska Junction, just outside Gatewood to the north, are home to several annual events. The Morgan Junction Community Festival hosts live music and other performances in June. The West Seattle Summer Fest is held at Alaska Junction in July. This three-day street fair includes music, food and shopping.
Only 16 minutes to downtown
There are a few bus stops in the community; however, McYnturff says that locals primarily rely on their cars for commuting. Downtown Seattle is a 16-minute drive via local roads. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is a 10-mile drive via Washington State Route 509 South.
