Sedillo offers scenic seclusion just outside Albuquerque

Hidden in the hills of the Manzano Mountains, Sedillo is a small community whose eclectic homes share a common quality: space. A series of narrow, winding streets — some paved only with dirt — weave through this area 24 miles east of Albuquerque. Many of the homes aren’t visible from the road. Instead, trees shroud the breadth of Sedillo’s properties, providing a sense of privacy. “Most of the lots are on 2 acres. Some a little bit less, some are more,” says Joseph Lopez, an area Realtor with Realty One Group of New Mexico, who sells in Sedillo. “All of the homes of true customs. The big thing there is that horses are allowed. And so many of the homes have either barns or stables, or both.”

Log cabin or contemporary, Sedillo’s homes blend with the landscape

Sedillo is a place where no two homes are the same. The area mostly has one-offs with log cabin, contemporary and New Traditional styling. “Most of them do have pitched roofs because it does snow there more than it does in Albuquerque,” Lopez says. “In Albuquerque, they have flat roofs, but these are all mainly pitched because of the snow.” Sedillo's spacious lots leave room for spacious floor plans — the average here is about 2,400 square feet. Listings sell for $600,000 to about $1 million. “It’s not completely built out,” Lopez says. “There are some 2-acre lots that people are holding onto. But I think, eventually, the population is going to reach that area.” The CAP Index Crime Score in Sedillo is 1 out of 10, compared tothe national average of 4.

Albuquerque and Moriarty-Edgewood school systems cover the area

The Albuquerque Public Schools system has a B-plus grade on Niche and serves the western half of Sedillo. The southern and western portions of the community are zoned for the B-rated Moriarty-Edgewood School District. Those in Albuquerque Public Schools attend A. Montoya Elementary, which has a B-plus grade. They move on to A-minus-rated Roosevelt Middle and B-rated Manzano High. Manzano includes an integrated Student Growth Center, where students can get tutoring, play games and socialize after school twice a week.

Students in the Moriarty-Edgewood School District attend Route 66 Elementary, which has a B rating, and Edgewood Middle, which is A-minus-rated. Moriarty High has a B-minus grade and offers courses in agriculture, technology and modern arts.

Interstate 40 links Sedillo to the wider region

As secluded as Sedillo may feel, it’s still close to New Mexico’s most populous city. “The nice appeal to that particular community is that it’s only about 20 minutes from Albuquerque,” Joseph says. While Sedillo is almost exclusively residential, residents can hop on nearby Interstate 40 to access Albuquerque and all it has to offer. Residents commute to Albuquerque for dining, grocery shopping, jobs and more. Smaller towns like Edgewood, 7 miles east, have their own amenities.

Ola’s is an option for dining, right at home

Though most options are in Albuquerque, Ola’s Route 66 Lunch Box is a local spot to grab a bite. Ola’s is open for breakfast and lunch and is known for its breakfast burritos, barbecue, cinnamon rolls and peach cobbler. Choices on Albuquerque’s eastern outskirts include Vick's Vittles Country Kitchen, whose huge cowboy burrito is popular. Smith’s, Sprouts Farmers Market and Costco are all down the road from Vick’s. There’s also a Walmart in Edgewood.

Bernalillo County is a hiker’s paradise

The area’s mountainous landscape lends itself to hiking. Bernalillo County, which encompasses Sedillo and Albuquerque, has many trails. Spots close by include the Lower Pine Trail, a 9-mile loop open not just to hiking but also for horseback riding and mountain biking. The Cedro Peak Trail is about 15 miles in total and offers scenic views. The Edgewood Equestrian Center, 8 miles away, is another outlet for those with horses. The Wildlife West Nature Park, near the equestrian center in Edgewood, has nature trails where visitors can see coyotes, foxes and other animals from outside their enclosures.

Edgewood organizes several community experiences

Sedillo residents can make the quick trip to Edgewood for community events. The town hosts a Fourth of July fireworks show during the summer, multiple arts and crafts fairs and a trunk-or-treat for Halloween at Venus Park. There’s also a Christmas parade on state Route 344 in early December, followed by a tree lighting at Venus Park.
