Suburban sweet spot for Tampa commuters
Seffner’s small subdivisions, 16 miles from downtown Tampa, have become a sweet spot for commuters who want more bang for their buck. “It’s a great middle-ground for people who work in Tampa or Lakeland and want to be near good schools and shopping,” says Sheila Dean, Realtor for 10 years with Coldwell Banker Realty. Residents can hop on Interstate 4 to the north or Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard to the south for an easy drive into the city. Seffner is comprised of small communities where the suburbs meet the country. Folks can drive to the city during the week and go fishing on Lake Weeks on the weekend. Agricultural fields and wooded spaces separate groups of residential streets. Growing popularity has come with developments of newer Craftsman homes that mix with older communities of ranch-style and mid-century homes. “It’s becoming more popular, but prices have remained lower than most suburbs in Hillsborough County,” says Dean. Prices range from $200,000 to just under $800,000. Kids attend some of the highest-rated schools in the county, like Strawberry Crest High, rated an A by Niche. Despite feeling removed from the city, residents find multiple grocery options and restaurants just a couple of miles from home.
Mid-century ranch-style and new Craftsman homes
Seffner has a variety of old and new suburban developments. Newer communities have a uniform appearance, with manicured, midsize lawns and homes that follow the same Spanish-influenced Craftsman architecture with stucco exteriors. Older communities show their roots through enchanting live oaks draped with Spanish moss shading ranch-style, mid-century and Spanish Revival homes accompanied by a bit more greenspace. Two-bedroom 1950s ranch-styles are at the low end of the price range, around $200,000. Three-to-four-bedroom ranch-style, Spanish Revival and Craftsman homes are around the median price of $400,000. Larger budgets can also find a mix of old and new homes, like a four-bedroom ranch-style on Lake Weeks for $790,000, up to a sprawling 2016 seven-bedroom ranch-style home on a large lawn for $1.1 million.

A-rated Strawberry Crest High School
Neighborhood students may attend Hillsborough County Public Schools, which receive a B-plus overall from Niche. Kids begin less than a mile drive from home at Lopez Elementary, graded a B, and continue at Burnett Middle, rated a C. They round out their educational journey at Strawberry Crest High, given an outstanding A-grade. Strawberry Crest’s highly-regarded International Baccalaureate program is one reason Niche ranked it the No. 2 standout school in the Tampa area.
According to state test scores, 53% of students at Lopez Elementy are proficient in math and 50% in reading.
Fishing on Lake Weeks and pruning the community garden
Outside the city, residents can enjoy tranquil outdoor spaces like Lake Weeks, a body of rippling blue water lined on the perimeter by finely-aged live oaks veiled with Spanish moss. Folks come here to cast a line off the dock or enjoy the scenery from the bank. People of all ages enjoy reading and recreation at Seffner-Mango Library and Park. On a hot day, folks cool while reading a novel in the library and then walk outside to play in the grass fields or jog around the paved path. Plant lovers come here to exercise their gardening muscles in the large community garden. Seffner is home to the cricket haven of Tampa, Higginbotham Park, where people come to watch or play in the Tampa Cricket League.

Grocery stores and Cuban sandwiches 2 miles away
Residents drive a couple of miles along Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard to shop at their choice of grocery stores and grab a bite at locally-owned restaurants. Folks get their hands dirty while enjoying the slow-smoked flavors at Kojack’s House of Ribs. Another go-to is Kim’s Cuban Sandwich Shop, specializing in Tampa-style Cuban sandwiches, which adds slices of Genoa salami on top of the slowly roasted pork. This is not to be confused with a Miami-style Cuban, as there’s a long-standing debate over which is superior. When not biting into a hot-pressed Cuban, folks check off their grocery list at Publix, ALDI or Winn-Dixie. They also go to Walmart for big-box and department-store items.

Folks drive 16 miles to downtown Tampa for annual events like the Gasparilla Pirate Festival, which honors the city’s mythical buccaneer legend, Jose Gaspar. People join in on the parades and gather at the waterfront to see replica eighteenth-century pirate ships. Another must-see event is the River O’Green Fest, where the city celebrates Saint Patrick’s Day by turning the Hillsborough River green.
