A coastal atmosphere in Shallotte
A few miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean, the town of Shallotte has a rural atmosphere just minutes from busy shopping centers and restaurants in Brunswick County. The winding Shallotte River snakes through peaceful residential pockets and a quiet commercial district while keeping the tourists at bay. “Shallotte has a coastal feel with river access and marshes, but it doesn’t have the touristy atmosphere that you’ll find in nearby communities like Ocean Isle Beach,” says local real estate agent Jesse McCrery with Coldwell Banker Sloane Realty.
A rapidly growing housing market
Some homes south of the downtown area surround the River’s Edge Golf Club or sit in neighborhoods like Briarwood Estates. Colonial Revivals, bungalows and brick ranch-style homes were built between the 1960s and ’90s, most on spacious lots next to tree-shaded streets. However, with its steadily growing population, the area also has a handful of 21st-century neighborhoods and numerous subdivisions still in development. “We have had huge growth in the past 10 years,” says McCreary. “In the past few years alone, we have had at least three new neighborhoods with 300 or so homes each — and we’re expecting more growth in the coming years.” Smaller homes and fixer-uppers can go for $150,000 to $215,000, while larger and recently renovated builds range from $225,000 to $600,000. Condos and townhomes range from $165,000 to $400,000.
Shallotte area schools and programs at Rourk Library
Most area students attend either Union Elementary School or Supply Elementary School, rated A-minus and B from Niche. Shallotte Middle School and West Brunswick High School both receive a B-minus. The high school partners with Brunswick Community College for dual enrollment courses. Students can also take courses in one of the high school’s seven career and technical education pathways, from automotive service to horticulture. Nearby Rourk Library offers regular programs including kids craft workshops and a monthly adult book club.
Two nearby beaches and events in Mulberry Park
Most residents are within a 15-minute drive of the beach. “You’re about equal distance from Ocean Isle Beach and Holden Beach,” McCrery says. “They both have a similar atmosphere, but Holden Beach is a bit bigger. Where you go typically just depends on which is closest to your house.” About 10 miles inland, the Shallotte Riverwalk has a quarter-mile boardwalk and shaded gazebos along the Shallotte River. Anglers can cast a line for speckled trout and flounder, and the area is popular among bird watchers for its blue heron and eagle habitats. The River’s Edge Golf Club has an 18-hole course designed by golf icon Arnold Palmer. The 10-acre Mulberry Park has a large playground, paved walkways, open field space and an amphitheater. On Saturday mornings from May to August, the park has a farmers market. From July to September, it hosts the weekly Shallotte Concert Series featuring up-and-coming performers and local food vendors.
Shopping centers and local eateries on Main Street
Main Street serves as the local commercial district lined with small businesses and large shopping centers. Jumpin Java Espresso Company serves specialty lattes, smoothies and tea, and the Purple Onion Cafe offers sweet and savory brunch dishes a few doors down. Wing & Fish Company is a local favorite, especially on game nights. “It’s always packed,” says McCrery. “They’re pretty good about accommodating a lot of people, but it's usually full of people watching football or basketball alongside dinner.” Coastal Walk Marketplace and Shallotte Crossing shopping centers are located in the center of town, with stores like PetSmart, Marshalls and The Home Depot. Shoppers can pick up their groceries at the nearby Walmart, Food Lion or Hill’s Supermarket.
Taking the Ocean Highway to Wilmington or Myrtle Beach
The Ocean Highway can take drivers 35 miles northeast to downtown Wilmington or 40 miles southwest to Myrtle Beach, over the border in South Carolina. Wilmington International Airport is about 40 miles away.
