Popular local businesses and events 6 miles from Downtown Pittsburgh

The small residential borough of Sharpsburg, 6 miles from Downtown Pittsburgh, is easy to overlook. However, within the gridded streetscape, residents shop and dine at popular local businesses before attending bustling events hosted by the Sharpsburg Neighborhood Organization. “You’d miss it if you didn’t know it was there since it’s between two bridges,” says Kristin Chick, Realtor at Howard Hannah Real Estate Services. “But it has a lot going for it. Small as it is, there’s quite a bit of shopping and dining about Sharpsburg. There’s always something going on.” The legacy of homegrown businesses in Sharpsburg dates back to Henry J. Heinz, who bottled his first product in the area. While his house has since been moved to Greenfield Village in Michigan, his legacy continues through the collection of trendy eateries lining Main Street.

Local businesses on Main Street

Residents try burger patties sandwiched between fried ramen noodle cakes while sipping a craft beer from Dancing Gnome Brewery. Locals hitchhike across the galaxy while remaining seated at Hitchhiker Brewing Company as they sample brews featuring mango and passion fruit. Residents with a sweet tooth stop by Sugar Spell Scoops. “My personal favorite, the reason I go to Sharpsburg, is the vegan ice cream store, Sugar Spell Scoops,” says Chick. “My favorite flavor is mint chocolate chip.” The ice cream parlor makes its desserts from a small shop decorated with black and white walls and accented with lavender and electric blue. Hand-crafted espresso drinks serve as a morning pick-me-up from the local chain Redhawk Coffee Roasters. Thrift-store enthusiasts and toy collectors enjoy Second Harvest Thrift and D and E Collectables. ZYNKA Gallery displays contemporary art from artists outside and within Pittsburgh. Groceries may be purchased at nearby Market District Supermarket.

Commuters use Route 28 and Route 8

Route 28 and Route 8 surround the borough, and the two bridges that border the area make car-dependent Sharpsburg a convenient place for commuters. Due to the area’s size, restaurants, events and other neighborhood amenities are accessible on foot. Bus stops line Main Street for residents who wish to use public transportation.

Important to know

Flooding during storms and heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Pittsburgh. Sharpsburg borders the Allegheny River, and flooding is inevitable. This, however, does not deter residents from enjoying all Sharpsburg has to offer. “It’s not terrible,” says Chick. “We did have some really treacherous rain that had a major impact on a lot of areas in Pittsburgh. People who have been living here a very long time have different systems to deal with this, like French drains.” Being so close to the highway is another concern, but newly erected noise barriers make the roadway background noise.
