Shawangunk is a rural Hudson Valley town with epic views

Shadowed by the towering Shawangunk Mountain range is the small but scenic Town of Shawangunk. Its name is derived from a Munsee Lenape word that means smoky air to describe the steamy, humid air that hovers around town due to its proximity to the mountains. Landscapes comprise of swaths of farmland and rugged terrain, attracting avid hikers, nature enthusiasts and those looking for a quiet, laid-back lifestyle in the heart of Hudson Valley. "The quality of life is much better around here," says Marion Bruhns, a local top-producing associate broker with Howard Hanna Rand Realty. "The air is cleaner, you have beautiful vistas everywhere you look, less traffic than the city and a more relaxed atmosphere." With proximity to New Paltz and Middletown, two popular urban hubs around the Valley, a nearby train station and an 80-mile commute to New York City, an influx of city dwellers looking for more space during the 2020 pandemic has led to increased housing demands around the Valley, and Shawangunk is no exception.

Modest and luxury custom-built homes

Winding country roads give way to colorful bungalows and ranch-style homes priced from the $200,000s to the $500,000s. Other streets feature 21st-century Colonial Revivals and New Traditionals on larger lots that range from the $500,000s to the $700,000s. New construction is common due to the plethora of large, buildable lots. Contemporary Craftsman-style dwellings with granite countertops and stainless-steel appliances can sell between the mid $700,000s to over $1 million depending on square footage and lot size. Most homes offer a sense of privacy, as woodlands and farmland offer natural barriers from neighbors. "It's a different way of life. When I first moved from the city, I couldn't sleep for a whole week since the sounds of chirping birds would wake me up early," Bruhns says. Historic farmhouses, custom-built luxury properties and modern log cabins on acreage are hidden behind the tree line on sprawling, secluded estates that can sell for as much as $2 million. Residents enjoy a low CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4. However, the town's proximity to waterways and wooded areas increases the risk of localized flooding and wildfires.

Hiking and rock climbing in the Shawangunk Mountains

The Shawangunk Mountain Ridge, the community's most significant draw, rises 2,000 feet above the town and is mainly made of quartz. Known by locals as 'the Gunks,' Deborah Medenbach, Realtor and associate broker with Berkshire Hathaway Homeservices Nutshell Realty, notes that the ridge is known for its world-class rock climbing, which draws a mix of hikers, bicyclists, and rock climbers, cross-country skiers and horseback riders. Nature preserves dot its expansive vista and feature miles of rugged trails, rushing waterfalls and weaving waterways. Minnewaska State Park Preserve is one of the most popular preserves and boasts three sparkling blue lakes. The most accessible and well-known lake is Minnewaska Lake. A paved road leads to a parking lot and a small tourist center, while a small beach and roped-off swimming area are close by. The nearby Maratanza Lake and Awosting Lake are only accessible by foot.

Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge is another nearby green space in the heart of town. The refuge features 597 acres of open fields, winding trails with blooming wildflowers and small elevated wooden decks offering undisturbed views for birdwatchers.

Wallkill is one of the two hamlets comprising the Town of Shawangunk and is home to Popp Memorial Park. This riverside green space features tranquil views, a boat ramp and a covered pavilion for community events, while the Wallkill Rail Trail is nearby. Locals are also close to the Village of Walden and its many green spaces like James Olley Community Park, where a playground, nature trails, a 9-hole disc golf course and a small lake for swimmers, boaters and anglers await. The hamlet of Pine Bush is also close by, and its town park includes a wooden castle-like playground, picnic pavilions and sporting facilities such as baseball diamonds and pickleball courts.

Eateries around Wallkill

Most shops and eateries are clustered around the east side of town in the hamlet of Wallkill. The winding Wallkill Avenue gives way to small businesses like Hudson Valley Chocolates, whose shelves are stocked with specialty desserts. Down the street, Parkview House Restaurant & Tavern is a local favorite for its American comfort food. Parkview also hosts a weekly Thursday trivia night and features like music every other Saturday. About 2 miles away, Magnanini Winery, Restaurant & Distillery's outdoor patio offers an afternoon escape for a glass of wine and scenic countryside views. Magnanini offers a rotating menu to pair with its wines of the day, while Italian specialties such as gnocchi, ravioli and prosciutto are made in-house. Every Sunday, Magnanini offers a six-course family-style dinner with alternating themes. Locals are also close to Angry Orchard Cider House, a nationally recognized brand known for its sweet alcoholic cider.

Residents on the east side of town are less than 10 miles from Walden's Hannaford for weekly grocery trips, and those on the west side are closer to Pine Bush's Hannaford. Many residents also shop at local farm stands, like Wright's Farm and Market in neighboring Gardiner. However, national box stores like Target are located about 15 away in Newburgh and Middletown, although the latter boasts a larger retail corridor. About 11 miles north, New Paltz's charming Main Street is a favorite destination for locally owned boutiques and restaurants.

UFOs and the Weekend of Wallkill

The hamlet of Wallkill is a hotspot for activity in town, with events ranging from the summer concert series at Popp Memorial Park to the annual Weekend of Wallkill. Every autumn, residents gather on the lawn at Wallkill Public Library to enjoy two days of family-friendly activities, carnival games, homemade crafts and contests that range from floral arrangements to LEGO sculptures. The event also hosts a photography and art show that spotlights local artisans. Residents are also close to Pine Bush's calendar of events, including the annual Pine Bush UFO Fair & Parade. "People come from all over. It's one of the main draws that attracts visitors from across the nation," Bruhns says. Every June, Pine Bush's Main Street brims with extraterrestrial beings from across the galaxy as attendees dress up in their wackiest alien apparel and tinfoil hats to win the best costume contest. Guests of all ages can also participate in various games and enjoy live music, food, and craft sellers.

Commutes around Shawangunk

Shawangunk is a heavily car-dependent community, as only one Ulster County Area Transit bus route stops at Wallkill's Popp Park, leading residents 11 miles north to New Paltz.
