A historic city known as 'the center of the Shoals'
Though the neighboring city of Muscle Shoals is known as the “Hit Recording Capital of the World,” Sheffield has its own rich music history. Legends like Bob Dylan, Cher and the Rolling Stones recorded some of their greatest hits right here in the 1970s. Today, the music industry is still booming with artists like Lana Del Ray and Chris Stapleton recently recording in Sheffield. “Sheffield is really the center of the whole Shoals region,” says Jeanne Lambert, a resident of the neighboring city of Florence. “It’s got all the city amenities, plus all the outdoor recreation on the Tennessee River.” The city of about 9,000 has also been a local healthcare hub since Helen Keller Hospital opened in 1921. Other major industries in the Shoals region include manufacturing and education.
