From kayak excursions and fishing to sandcastles in the summertime, Shoreview, Minnesota, is a city defined by its outdoor recreation amenities, specifically its lakes. Small beaches border Snail and Turtle lakes and walking trails wind beneath mature trees. During the winters, fishing rods are swapped out for ice skates and some residents here, even enjoy water views from their homes. Community members come together for annual events like farmers' markets, parades, movie nights and fireworks display, all concentrated around Shoreview Commons Park. "Schools, parks, quality residential neighborhoods and a one-of-a-kind community center make Shoreview a distinctive community," says Brad Martens, who's served as the city manager since 2021. Minneapolis and St. Paul are also both within 15 miles, making this smaller city a popular home base for commuters.

Modest mid-century homes and estates by the water
Housing in Shoreview spans generations and includes everything from midcentury homes in neighborhoods like Lake Judy and Wabbasso Lake — both of which are south of Interstate 694 — to 1990s and post-2000s-era homes in areas like Snail Lake . "The values of the homes maintain themselves, and it's got an established neighborhood feel," says Keller Williams Realtor Shawn Korby, who has more than two decades of experience selling in the area.
Streets are gently sloped, and trees shade spacious front lawns. Costs vary, but the median listing price for a single-family home in Shoreview hovers just under $400,000, which is also below the national median. The area also offers some townhouse options, which tend to fall within the $100,000 range, while some outliers — like large lakefront properties can reach into the multimillions.

A new 'Destination Playground,' ice skating and Slice of Shoreview in July
Along with its general accessibility and school system, Shoreview is coveted for its parks, trails and lakefront recreation. There are 16 parks in Shoreview ranging from small neighborhood playgrounds and picnic facilities to larger forested areas maintained by the county. Completed in 2021, Shoreview Commons Destination Playground is perhaps the city's most notable outdoor feature. It's located in the Commons neighborhood and features colorful themed sections for children of different age groups, as well as a skate park and several rainwater collecting mechanisms. Nearby, the community center's indoor pool screens "Dive-In Movies," and there's live music outside on Wednesday nights throughout the summer. Outdoor ice rinks freeze over during the winter months when Shoreview temperatures drop down into the single digits, and snow collects on the ground several inches at a time. The swimming beach at Turtle Lake Park is popular during temperate summers, and fishermen cast off from the banks at Vadnais-Snail Lakes Regional Park. At the end of July, Island Lake County Park hosts Slice of Shoreview, a festival weekend with classic carnival rides and dozens of food vendors.

Highly-rated public schools, community center learning and library classes
Shoreview's top-rated school system is one of this area's primary draws. Students are split between two districts: Mounds View Public Schools, which earns an overall A grade from Niche and serves the majority of residents, and the Roseville Public School District, which earns an A-minus rating. Mounds View's two public high schools are ranked within the country's top 10% and residents of all ages can take part in learning opportunities at the Shoreview Community Center, where there are history lectures, ballroom dance classes and watercolor lessons. The Shoreview Branch of the Ramsey County Library offers tech help and career services.

Much of the city's retail is concentrated in Grass Lake , where small shopping plazas are home to sit-down Italian restaurants, banks and dental offices. "There are several very good small-brand grocery stores around here," says Julia Wang of Keller Williams Classic Realty, also highlighting big-box options like Target off I-694. For locally sourced produce throughout the summer, residents can head to the farmers market that takes place in the community center's parking lot.

Highway 96, I-694 and farmers market shopping
Location is a major draw for prospective buyers, says Wang, and it's common for residents to commute into the Twin Cities for work. Both are within 15 miles — or about 20 minutes — of Shoreview via Interstate 35, and the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is less than 20 miles away. Although most rely on their own cars as opposed to public buses, Route 62, part of the Metro Transit System, stops outside the Shoreview Community Center on its way to St. Paul. Medical care is accessible at M Health Fairview St. John's Hospital, less than 10 miles away in Maplewood.
