Silver Creek offers space, scenery and easy interstate access
The Silver Creek area is about 13 miles from Downtown Morganton. The community includes the town of Glen Alpine, the upscale neighborhood Silver Creek Plantation, and countless homes on multi-acre lots. “It’s kind of a farming area outside of the city a good little bit,” says Chris Gettys, A Realtor and broker with eXp Realty who lives nearby and sells throughout the Morganton area. “Silver Creek Plantation is very nice, with nice homes. It’s a few minutes from the interstate so it’s easy to get to Asheville and into Morganton.”
Mix of modest and upscale homes in a rural mountain setting
Most homes in Silver Creek Township are manufactured and ranch-style with three bedrooms. They sit on spacious lots, sometimes spanning multiple acres, flanked by mature trees. In gated Silver Creek Plantation, large custom New Traditional homes sit on hilly roads and offer views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The median price is about $250,000; typically, manufactured homes and ranch-style houses sell for between $200,000 and $3500,000, while larger homes on multiple acres are often priced between $500,000 and $850,000. Land is also available, ranging from $20,000 to $200,000.
Local schools include Patton High and a private K-9 option
Burke County Public Schools serves the community and has an A-minus rating on Niche. Some of the closest schools are W.A. Young Elementary, which has a B rating; Table Rock Middle, which also has a B; and Robert L. Patton High, which has an A-minus. Patton High offers clubs and organizations including Art Club, Robotics and Engineering Club, and Gaming Club. Silvercreek Adventist, which is not yet rated by Niche, is the private school option in the community and serves kindergarten through ninth grades.
Golf, hiking and camping are all close to the community
South Mountains State Park is on the community’s southeast side and features hiking trails and fishing. Golfers tee off at the Silver Creek Golf Club, a semi-private 18-hole course. “It’s a great golf course,” Gettys says. “It’s on the foothills, so it’s hilly, there are a number of water features and a really nice clubhouse.” Multiple camping spots are located on the community’s north side, including Lake James State Park, which also offers swimming at Paddy’s Creek, beach access, boat ramps and picnic shelters. “I go there quite often. It’s mountainous and the water is really clear,” Gettys says.
Dining, shopping and health care are in or near Downtown Morganton
In the far northern section of Silver Creek, there are a few restaurants in the town of Glen Alpine, including Glen Alpine Station, a cozy local bar and grill that serves classic American dishes. A small selection of services, stores and houses of worship are also located in Glen Alpine. Silver Fork Winery is near the heart of the area and features tastings, live music and food trucks on the weekends. Morganton is less than 15 miles away and is home to big-box stores, UNC Health Blue Ridge, and a mix of chain and local restaurants. Among the most popular is Uncle Eee’s on South Sterling Street. “If you want a good greasy burger, that’s the place to go,” Gettys says.
No public transit, but major roads offer easy regional access
Due to the lack of regularly scheduled public transportation options in the area, residents get around by car. Interstate 40, State Highway 70 and State Highway 64 run through the community and connect to nearby cities and towns. For those looking to travel by air, the nearest major commercial option is Charlotte Douglas International Airport, 80 miles to the east in Charlotte.
Weather and crime considerations
Summers here are typically hot and humid, with average temperatures in the high 80s. Winter temperatures are often in the 50s and 60s. Hurricanes are possible; in 2024, the Morganton area was hit by Hurricane Helene.
