Train station turned connected suburb

Silverton isn’t on Cincinnati’s 52 neighborhoods list — perhaps because it stands alone. Northeast of downtown and near Kennedy Heights, this community began as an agricultural village in the early 1800s. Fertile soil led to population growth, and in the mid-19th century, a rail station connected the area to downtown. That connectivity, that through-line, is still an active part of this community. “A lot of people move to Silverton because it's so centrally located,” says 14-year Realtor Molly Blenk with Comey and Shepherd. “They’re only a mile from Kenwood Mall, and the highways are close. The Cincinnati Public School District and lots of local restaurants are also a big draw.”

Top-rated education at Walnut Hills

Students can start at Silverton Paideia Elementary, which is conveniently in the neighborhood and rated a C by Niche. They’ll likely travel seven miles south to Walnut Hills High, serving grades six through 12 and receiving an A-plus from Niche. This option is often worth the trip for many parents, as it’s the third-best public school in Cincinnati.

Cape Cods with Silver Maples

“There’s a lot of diversity in housing,” says Molley Blenk. “But Silverton tends to have more affordable homes on tree-lined streets. The houses are closer together and have a really great sense of community.” 1950s Cape Cods are the area’s most prominent landmarks, with characteristic steep roofs and pillared porches. Though rarer, clusters of brick ranch-styles are mixed in. Yards have room in the front and back for this neighborhood’s iconic Silver Maple trees, and mulch beds with a few bushes make for easy maintenance. For two bedrooms and a narrow lot, buyers can expect homes in the $240,000 to $270,000 range. Three-bedrooms will be in the upper 200s or as much as $300,000. These prices align with neighboring Deer Park, but Silverton residents pay slightly more for those bigger yards.

Kenwood Country Club, Silverton Park

Kenwood Country Club is central to the neighborhood, and its competitive 36-hole facility attracts residents and visitors alike. It’s one of only 20 clubs in the nation that has hosted major national tournaments, including the LPGA Queen City Championship in 2023. The site of the original Silverton Train Station, Silverton Park has veteran memorials and artifacts from the city’s past. Its museum has an Olympic uniform from Silverton native Barry Larkin, a retired Reds player and Cincinnati legend. To the north, the rarely crowded Ralph Fike Memorial Park has batting cages, baseball diamonds, tennis courts and basketball hoops.

Italianette and High Grain Brewery

Close to Silverton Park, people come from all around Cincinnati to eat Italianette Pizza, serving specialty pies like The Big Gripp — a chicken bacon ranch topped with local favorite Grippo Chips. Across the street, High Grain Brewery has transformed the old Silverton Police building into a local hangout, featuring live music and a seasonal Oktoberfest. Residents can also drive a mile east for one of the biggest malls in the city, as Kenwood Towne Center houses department stores like Macy’s and Dillard’s.

Taste of Silverton

Local restaurants come together in June for Taste of Silverton, when foodies can eat their way through the neighborhood and listen to live music. For a smaller party, Artclectic Gallery features local artists in rotating exhibitions and hosts a monthly tea session.

Silverton Police

Unlike other neighborhoods in Cincinnati, Silverton has its own police department, so residents will have quick response times to emergency calls.

Montgomery Road and Interstate 71

“Silverton has been working on the infrastructure, and there’s a lot of pride right now,” says Realtor Molly Blenk with Comey and Shepherd. “The streetscape project on Montgomery Road added bike lanes and sidewalks for people that want to be outside.” Though a walking culture is emerging, the area is primarily car dependent. Drivers can take Montgomery Road to nearby Pleasant Ridge or travel east to Kenwood. Jewish and TriHealth Hospitals are in this area, and commuters can access Interstate 71, making a 10-mile drive into downtown.
