West Tenth Street
Cottages and multiunit properties
West Tenth Street has primarily single-family homes. “The homes were built from the ‘40s to the ‘80s,” says local Realtor Andy Kontz. “There are some duplexes, which are typically rentals.” The houses are typically small cottages with one or two bedrooms, and prices start around $150,000. Three-bedroom homes typically cost $200,000 to $250,000. Investors looking to purchase rental properties can find opportunities here, and prices range depending on the number of units in the property. West Tenth Street has flat streets lined with sidewalks and small yards. The neighborhood does back up to a train track on its northern end, so buyers looking at homes closer to 9th Street should be aware of potential noise.Authentic Ethiopian restaurants and specialty grocery stores
West Tenth Street has plenty of restaurants within the neighborhood, including Ethiopian cafes like Lalibela and Fasika and the casual Chinese spot Golden Harvest. For a quick meal to go, locals pick up from Taco John's, KFC or McDonald's. JJ's Billiards & Darts is where residents hang out on late nights and weekends, playing rounds of pool while downing Shiners or root beer and taking breaks for slices of pizza. A Dollar General in the neighborhood gives those who live here access to essentials. Locals can pick up groceries from Juba Restaurant & Grocery Store, which specializes in Halal food, or La Michoacana, a Mexican grocery store across 12th Street. The closest supermarkets are the Sioux Falls Food Co+op, a mile and a half away, and the Sunshine Foods on 2nd Avenue, 2 miles away.Events for all ages at the Great Plains Zoo
The Great Plains Zoo hosts events for patrons of all ages throughout the year. On summer Wednesday evenings, the zoo's open for two extra hours for Wild Wednesdays, and each week offers special programming like a teddy bear clinic, splash pad party and pollinator crafts. Around Valentine's Day, "Woo at the Zoo" teaches visitors over 21 about animal mating; tickets include appetizers and non-alcoholic drinks, and alcohol is available for purchase. On the Saturday before Easter, the zoo has egg hunts throughout the day, sectioned off for ages four and under or five and above.Career prep in the Sioux Falls School District
West Tenth Street students attend Garfield Elementary School, which has a B-minus on Niche, followed by the C-plus-rated George McGovern Middle School. They continue to Jefferson High School, which has not been rated on Niche. Students can supplement their core classes at Jefferson High School with specialized career training at the Career & Technical Education Academy. This Sioux Falls School District campus has state-of-the-art facilities and offers everything from hands-on technical training in trades like welding and auto technology to specialized career prep in areas like biomedical sciences and finance. The Sioux Falls School District provides transportation to and from these classes.Spend time outside at Sherman Park
West Tenth Street is just blocks north of Sherman Park, one of the city's most expansive outdoor spaces. "Sherman Park is one of our pioneer parks," says Assistant Director of Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Brett Kollars. "It's home to our Great Plains Zoo and also has a softball complex which won Softball Complex of the Year from USA Softball." The zoo's exhibits include animals from all over the world, and the park has recently added a splash pad for kids to cool off on hot summer days. Joggers, cyclists and walkers can access the Sioux Falls Recreation Trail, a 36-mile multiuse path that loops the city, from Sherman Park.Just west of downtown
West Tenth Street is “pretty walkable,” Kontz says, “and it’s close to mass transit.” It’s a mile and a half west of downtown Sioux Falls, and it takes five minutes driving or 15 minutes via bike or bus to get there. The nearest hospital is Sanford USD Medical Center, a mile south of the neighborhood, and the Sioux Falls Regional Airport is 4 miles north of the neighborhood.
