History, industry and a thriving art scene

The Somerville neighborhood of Lincoln Park has a long blue-collar history among the urban communities surrounding Boston, a former industrial neighborhood that takes pride in its brickmaking, meatpacking and quarrying roots near the more prestigious neighborhoods in Cambridge. During the last 20 years, the City of Somerville has invested in the infrastructure in Lincoln Park, inviting a vibrant art scene into the community that now includes galleries, statues, murals, and several public art installations.

A housing market with lots of character

The streets meander in an unorthodox pattern between Harvard, Inman Square and Union Square, a charming testament to the community’s age and a familiar characteristic of the communities between the two rivers flowing into Boston Harbor. “It’s a fun neighborhood to explore,” says Charles Cherney, a Realtor who has served hundreds of clients in Cambridge and Somerville. “The streets don’t follow a particular pattern, and it gives the neighborhood character. It’s one of the elements that I think is kind of fun.” The homes in Lincoln Park reflect a similar New England character and history, an eclectic mix of three-story buildings that includes colorful turn-of-the-century rowhouses, single-family Victorian homes — many with Italianate accents — and modern farmhouse-style homes with multi-level outdoor spaces, with prices ranging from $800,000 to $2 million. Lincoln Park is also home to several condominium buildings, where a two-bedroom unit starts at $750,000.

The Wine & Cheese Cask is a local institution serving fine wine, imported cheeses, and homemade sandwiches from behind their deli counter. Residents can order a pizza from Beacon Street Pizza or share a plate of Pad Thai and drunken noodles at Thai Hut Restaurant for dinner. The Thirsty Scholar Pub hosts a weekly trivia night and comedy night inside its Irish-pub-themed interior, with plenty of televisions and game-day specials to enjoy local sports.

Somerville’s investment in recreation

The eponymous Lincoln Park was renovated in 2018 when the City of Somerville invested $9.4 million into upgrading the ball fields, playgrounds, skate park, dog park, and community gardens in Lincoln Park. “Lincoln Park is a great green space that people enjoy in various ways, and it really is a signature of this neighborhood,” says Cherney. Residents can spend the afternoon walking the dog at Perry Park or meeting with friends for a playdate at Palmacci Playground. On rainy days, locals visit Play Union, an indoor amusement center for kids to explore, imagine, create and play.
