A revitalized downtown and a central train station make Somerville one of the most desirable boroughs in Somerset County. “What’s transformed in the downtown in the past couple of years, with the restaurants on Division Street, that’s been really attractive for people, especially coming from the city,” says Christina Duncan, a Broker and Sales Associate with the Diamond Key team at eXp Realty who has lived in the area for over 20 years. For New York City residents looking for more space and good schools, Somerville has a lot of appeal. “The proximity to the other things that this area has to offer along with commuting and the school system in Somerset County,” says Duncan, “I think that encourages people as a place they can be longer term.”

Historic homes and new luxury townhouses, though very limited inventory

Somerville’s streets showcase a mix of historic colonial and Victorian homes, as well as a few new luxury townhouse developments. “You do have a lot of older historic homes that still have a lot of character in the area,” says Duncan. A three or four-bedroom colonial or Cape Cod-style home costs between $470,000 to $515,000. Larger Victorian or colonial homes in the northwestern part of the community can run between $650,000 to $730,000. On the eastern side of the borough, near the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, smaller Cape Cod and ranch-style houses are prevalent and can run from $400,000 to $610,000, though availability is very scarce. Near Somerville Station, a two-bedroom townhouse runs $450,000 to $580,000.

Guests enjoy outdoor dining in warmer months at Origin French Thai and down the street, Division Café offers Costa Rican fare. From May through September Division Street also features regular live music, with concerts every Saturday evening. Division connects to Main Street where Kyma serves Greek specialties, seafood and small plates and Village Brewing Company pours craft beers. Multiple coffee shops, including Amber Coffee Co, serve lattes and offer outdoor café seating. Groceries can be found at the ShopRite of Somerville, just off of Main Street.
