Feeding those in need
For those who need access to healthy food, Unity Garden is just over the border to the west. The non-profit was founded 15 years ago by former nurse Sara Stewart when she discovered that a large segment of the Northern Indiana population is vulnerable and unhoused. She planted her first garden in Downtown South Bend and distributed food to those in need. There are now over 41 gardens, with the central garden located on Prast Boulevard. The organization's mission is to improve community health by making fruits and vegetables more accessible and providing nutrition and education on food preparation. Volunteers and staff plant and care for the gardens, and community members are invited to come out at harvest. The garden is open to the public and does not require proof of economic status. According to Stewart, "This is a uniquely dignified way to provide for the disadvantaged. "The organization holds events and classes, has a store, and recruits volunteers.
