A classic Chicago suburb south of the city
South Chicago Heights was initially settled as a farming community in the late 1800s and was primarily an agricultural area until the early 20th century. Today, South Chicago Heights has diverse housing options outside the heart of Chicago. "South Chicago Heights is a very stable working-class neighborhood," says Greta McKenna, real estate broker with Re/Max 10. "It's a very affordable place, and I think the stability of the community is what brings people to the area." Depending on their address, students can learn within the local school districts, and a few can walk or bike to school. Brick bungalows from the 1950s are going through renovations, and local favorite restaurants can date back to the early 1900s and mid-2000s. The Sauk Trail Woods nature preserve hugs the neighborhood and creates a quiet green space for locals to enjoy.

Chicago-style brick bungalows from the 1950s
“South Chicago Heights has a fair number of desirable brick bungalows and frame homes without basements,” McKenna says. “It’s also more affordable than other areas around here and closer to downtown.” These brick, Chicago-style bungalows can be dated back to the 1950s, with little front porches resting beneath old trees. Neighborhoods often have sidewalks out front for walking or biking around the community. One to three-bedroom bungalows often cost between $150,000 and $230,000. Contemporary homes built in the 1990s in traditional styles sometimes have two stories. These residences with three or more bedrooms on quiet cul-de-sacs may cost between $230,000 and $330,000.

Sauk Trail Woods’ paved trails and native wildlife
The Sauk Trail Woods on the neighborhood's west side is a forested 630-acre preserve. “The forest preserves to the west are really nice,” McKenna says. “You see a lot of wildlife, like deer, and there are walking trails and places to picnic.” The preserve also creates a green belt that is “good for noise reduction and cleaner ai,” McKenna adds. The 4-mile-long Thorn Creek Trail System winds around the preserve’s lake, and fishermen can angle for bluegill, largemouth bass and green sunfish. Little parks nearby, like Jackson Park and Jirtle Park, have a few playground amenities for families and fields for soccer. Hecht Park, on the south side of the preserve, has a couple of baseball diamonds and a playground. The South Chicago Heights Senior Center hosts several weekly card games and meetings for social neighbors to gather.
