Accessible living in South Gate

Also known as Azalea City and named for the southern entrance to nearby Rancho San Antonio, South Gate is a community-oriented, family-friendly neighborhood with both small-town character and urban accessibility. As a “Gateway City” between Los Angeles County and Orange County, South Gate’s proximity to interstates and downtown L.A. has helped it grow and develop economically, and new retailers and businesses have further led this vibrant community to flourish. “Everybody knows each other here at South Gate and we are very community-based. We are experiencing lots of economic development with several new retail centers opening, which will bring in businesses and employment opportunities,” says Giselle Hernandez, marketing and community engagement manager at South Gate City Council. “The new SELA Cultural Center is going to be a big performing arts and entertainment hub for the local community.”

Single-family homes in South Gate

South Gate homes dot the tropical landscape with modest properties between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet and picket-fenced yards. Largely comprised of 1940s colorful cottages and bungalows, as well as Spanish ranchers with archways, South Gate homes are commonly priced between $500,000 and $850,000. There are also some fixer-uppers listed around $400,000, and several larger properties with multiple units fetching over $1 million. Many houses are multi-unit, duplexes and triplexes, and it is not uncommon for homeowners to live in one of the units and rent out the rest. Two-bedroom townhouses from the 1970s often list between $550,000 and $600,000.

Additional franchise eateries, IHOP and McDonald’s, are along Tweedy Boulevard, and Target and Walmart can be found on Firestone Boulevard. Locals can shop for fresh produce at the area’s farmers market on Mondays, or stop by one of the many area grocers, including Northgate Market and Super A Foods. Specialty markets include La Garniceria Meat Market. Residents can also grab coffee at Tierra Mia Coffee and catch a new release at the local Regal Edwards, or head to Lido for Latin music and dancing.
