Located 14 miles from downtown Springfield, the suburb of South Hadley is crisscrossed with streams and sits on the Connecticut River. Nature is a big draw for South Hadley residents, and it's access to parks full of forested areas is one of the town's unique aspects.

The first dinosaur footprints discovered in North America were spotted by the son of a South Hadley farmer in 1802. You can also visit the remains of America's first navigable canal at Canal Park. The Village Commons Shopping Mall, just off Mount Holyoke's campus, has several restaurants and South Hadley's Tower Theatres. The restaurant's colorful exterior welcomes residents in, and the burgers, fries and salads help them stick around. You can also head to Food 101 for a lesson in fine dining; sample Pommes Frites, wild mushroom ravioli, or spaghetti carbonara.

The town of Holyoke is just across the Connecticut River via Routes 202 or 116. You can follow those roads to hop on I-91 and make your way to downtown Springfield.
