First-time buyers enjoy South Haven’s laid-back vibe and price point
South Haven is a residential community in Portage Township with relatively low home prices and proximity to major highways. "The price point is especially attractive to those looking for a starter home," says Michelle Zupan, a broker and Realtor with Key Realty Indiana who specializes in Porter County communities. "A Cape Cod or ranch-style home there will be at least $30,000 less than the exact same house in a different nearby community." While attractive to first-time buyers, South Haven also has young families, retirees and long-time locals who enjoy a laid-back way of life, a short drive away from the amenities in more bustling cities.
Quiet streets and nearby amenities give South Haven its welcoming, livable appeal.

Cape Cods and ranch-style homes dominate the residential streets
Besides a few stores, storage facilities and small community churches, single-family homes and parks almost entirely make up the area. "It's very residential, so it has that neighborhood-type environment where people know one another and kids ride their bikes around," Zupan says. Cape Cods and ranch-style homes are the most prevalent and sell between $170,000 and $290,000. Some homes needing repairs and renovations have sold for as low as $130,000. Limited New Traditional and split-level homes are slightly more expensive, ranging from $300,000 to $360,000.

Quick access to shopping in Portage
Because South Haven is between the larger communities of Valparaiso and Portage, it reaps the benefits of nearby restaurants and stores without the same traffic or commotion. "It's smack dab between the bigger areas," Zupan says. "So, there isn't a need for big shopping areas or employers in South Haven. There also isn't the space since it's landlocked." A large Portage shopping area with strip malls and department stores is west on U.S. Highway 6. Stores include Menards, Walmart, Meijer, Aldi, fashion outfitters and home improvement centers. Back close to home are Save A Lot, fast-food chains and local bars. Rosewood Family Restaurant is a classic, no-frills diner serving American and Greek cuisines.

Outdoor recreation with a focus on baseball and softball
There are plenty of places to play baseball and softball in South Haven, including Haven Hollow Park, Field of Dreams Park and South Haven Little League Baseball Facility. The baseball facility is where minors, majors and senior division leagues practice and play. Haven Hollow Park has playgrounds, a pavilion and walking trails to a fishing dock on Salt Creek. More neighborhood parks and nature preserves are in the surrounding areas, and Lake Michigan is a short drive north. "You can get to a beach on the lake in 15 to 20 minutes," Zupan says.

U.S. Highway 6 and I-90 connect residents to nearby cities
There are no sidewalks in the residential neighborhoods, but the area has little to no through traffic. U.S. Highway 6 is the neighborhood's main road that runs east and west, and Interstate 90 is less than 2 miles north. "Many people in northwestern Indiana work in Chicago, which is only about 45 minutes away via the interstate," Zupan says. Northwest Health – Portage is to the west on Route 6, and Northwest Health – Porter is east on the same road. Chicago Midway International Airport is about 44 miles northwest, just short of downtown Chicago.
Chicago is just a 45-minute drive for local commuters.
Midway International Airport handles over 200,000 flights in a typical year.
