Small-town charm in a Minneapolis suburb

The highlight of South St. Paul is its sense of community, which this town exudes in every sense of the word, from the people to local businesses. "People who live in South St. Paul have lived here for a long time, and they appreciate that they know their neighborhood," says city clerk Deanna Werner. A great illustration of that is the lineup of annual local events, such as Flannel Fest and Kaposia Days, a festival that began in 1976. Home prices range between $200,000 to $350,000, and houses often sell fast, in part because that price range is lower than in comparable areas nearby. When it comes to shopping and dining, there are little to no big-name brands in the neighborhood. Instead, residents support local businesses like Knowland Fresh Foods, the neighborhood's go-to grocery store.

Choose from cape cods, bungalows, and split-level homes

Houses in South St. Paul tend to be a mix of Cape Cods, bungalows, and contemporary split-level homes, all within close proximity to each other. The majority are single-family, starting at $200,000 and going up to $350,000. Many line the sidewalks, with modest yard sizes due to their proximity to the city. Green spaces are highly coveted. According to Werner, "There's even a waiting list at the community garden because people don't want to give up their backyards."

A variety of local businesses to shop at

The majority of businesses in the area are locally owned. For loose-leaf tea and banana bread, residents visit Black Sheep Coffee Cafe, a common spot to meet up with neighbors: "There's always people in there just sitting and chatting- you will definitely run into people you know when you hop in there," Werner says. Werner also personally recommends Hilltop International Cuisine, a family-owned Pakistani restaurant. "I've had their curry chicken, and it was delicious." To experience a long-standing neighborhood establishment since 1963, residents dine at The Coop, a restaurant offering fried chicken and other American classics. Locals head to Knowland Fresh Foods, a locally owned and operated grocery store for groceries.

Annual community events in South St. Park

Because of its strong community, South St. Park hosts various events every year. One of the most notable is the Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing Museum dance, which happens twice a year as a fundraiser. Guests often dress up in WWII vintage clothing and compete for the best era dress reward. The funds from these events support the preservation and restoration of combat aircraft. The neighborhood's Parks and Recreation Department organizes year-round activities such as Flannel Fest during the winter or Splish Splash Bash, a summer party in July. South St. Park's most significant event is Kaposia Days, hosted by Kaposia Landing, a block party-type festival that began in 1976. Wener says that the parade is the highlight of the Kaposia Days, and that all events in South St. Park “ are well-attended and a lot of fun.”

Four bedrooms. A layout that makes sense. A neighborhood that delivers. South St. Paul is underrated and this house is another example of that. Three bedrooms up, one down. The layout creates natural separation without forcing it, ideal for a home office, a teenager who needs their own floor, or guests who deserve their privacy. The kitchen works. Gas stove, solid cabinet space, clean and ready
