About Sparta, MI

About Sparta, MI

A small village in West Michigan apple country

Sparta was first settled in 1844 as a small farming community, growing over the years with the addition of a railroad and manufacturing businesses. Today, the village's population is just over 4,000 people and the small community functions as a rural suburb for the much larger Grand Rapids. Sparta is nestled right at the heart of Kent County, the leading producer of apples in Michigan. Despite having access to a large metropolitan hub, Sparta holds on to its rural farming feel, with an annual Harvest Festival and Apple Festival and a lack of explosive growth seen in other Grand Rapids suburbs. As the Village of Sparta's DDA Director Elizabeth Morse says, "Sparta still feels like Main Street America. People know you and say hi, and when you go to the football games on a Friday night, you'll see everyone you know." With agricultural opportunities, a diverse economy and a small-town sensibility, Sparta strives to live up to its slogan: "A good place to grow."

Homes are surrounded by acres of protected farmland

A few homes at the heart of the village date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. But most homes here were built later than the 1950s, with construction getting newer farther from the village center. There are a few modern subdivisions, but the land surrounding Sparta is developing more slowly than other farming towns like Rockford of Hudsonville. A big reason for that is the hundreds of acres of preserved farmland that make up Sparta Township. The land around Sparta also tends to be more suited to farming than development. "The moist soil in Sparta is not as conducive to the rapid growth you are seeing in other places outside Grand Rapids," says Mike Lamb, a broker with Coldwell Banker AJS and lifelong Sparta resident. "And even though people here want to see the village grow and develop, the community also wants to see the farmland preserved." The average home price in Sparta is $305,000, which is higher than the Grand Rapids average. Older ranch homes start at around $200,000, and more modern construction can reach up to $400,000. Condo units range from $150,000 to $300,000.

Getting outside at farms, lakes and local parks

Sparta offers access to some of the best attractions that rural Kent County has to offer. Local farms offer corn mazes, bonfire nights, pick-your-own fruit fields and seasonal celebrations, especially in the summer and fall. There are also several nearby lakes, popular for swimming and fishing. Local hunting clubs visit the nearby state game areas, and the Sparta Miller Municipal Airport offers flight training and flying clubs. Eight parks within the village of Sparta offer sports fields, playgrounds and walking trails. Buth Field has a popular dog park, and Nash Park sits in the heart of downtown, making it a common spot for community events. The town center is also home to the Sparta Carnegie Township Library, which holds a kid's story time twice a week.

The Michigan Apple Festival and other year-round events

The village's historic town square buzzes with weekly live music, pop-up vendors and special events. Some of the most popular include the Sparta Celtic Festival, the Beer and Brat Festival and the Michigan Apple Festival. The Apple Festival includes performances from Johnny Appleseed, appearances by the Michigan Apple Queen and a celebration of all forms of the fruit — from jam to pies to freshly sliced. "There have been harvest festivals here for hundreds of years," Lamb says. "It's a way the community really celebrates our deep history of farming." The Town & Country Days event runs for a week in May to kick off the summer with a carnival, parade and traditional hay bale toss. From June to October, there's weekly live music and local vendors on Thursdays at the Square. During the winter, the village plans regular Santa appearances and holiday hayrides.

A walkable downtown social district

Sparta's walkable downtown area covers a few street blocks. Many of the boutiques and restaurants have kept the original building facades from the late 1800s, giving the area a quaint sense of charm. The downtown is a registered social district, meaning alcoholic beverages are allowed outside during certain hours. Locals can pick up food and drinks from the trendy Brick Haus Brews or the always-popular Downtown Trini's & Margarita Joe's and then picnic in Rogers Park. The social district is filled with picnic tables as well. Sparta has one large grocery store and essentials like a post office and pharmacy.

Football pride at the local Sparta High

Sparta Area Public Schools has two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, all located in the village. Niche rated the school district with an overall B-plus grade. The youngest kids can attend the Sparta Early Childhood Center, a local building that offers several childcare and preschool programs, some of which are federally funded. According to the Michigan Department of Education, Sparta Senior High School had the fourth highest attendance rate of any Kent County school, at 97% for the 2022-23 school year. The high school offers 12 AP courses and partners with the Kent Career Technical Center and Grand Rapids Community College to provide dual enrollment opportunities. Sparta Senior High School got a brand-new football stadium in 2018, complete with a turf field. While football games are typically well-attended by the community, Sparta's Homecoming game is an especially big event. A parade marches through the village streets to the Sparta Town Square for a pep rally and the crowning of the homecoming king.

Agriculture, manufacturing and commuting to Grand Rapids

Sparta's biggest employment sectors are manufacturing and agriculture. "What makes Sparta especially unique is our location next to the Ridge. Agriculture is a huge part of our economy," Morse says. "Fruit packing sheds are major employers, and we have incredible agritourism that draws people from all over." The Ridge is a 20-mile-long, 8-mile-wide swath of land offering exceptional fruit-growing conditions. However, many workers also commute to Grand Rapids, 15 miles away via State Route 37. The major city is a hub for healthcare and education jobs and has yearly festivals of culture and art. For longer trips, Sparta is about 30 miles from the Gerald R. Ford International Airport. The airport connects to 21 destinations nationwide, with additional seasonal options.

Important to know

The Sparta Fire and Rescue Department is a joint effort between the village and Sparta Township. The fire station is located at the center of the village. The village of Sparta has its own police department, staffed by six full-time officers. According to the FBI's Crime Data Explorer tool, the Sparta Police Department reported a crime rate that was significantly lower than the Grand Rapids and national average. Sparta experiences four distinct seasons, with particularly cold winters and an average snowfall of 65 inches. Temperatures regularly drop below freezing from November to March.
